標題[外電] With 22nd pick, Dallas Mavericks may take point guard

The Mavericks aren't married to their pick in Thursday's draft, the 22nd
overall selection. It's just that they can't find anyone to grant them a
divorce.
Not yet, anyway.
The reality of the great financial meltdown of 2009 is that NBA draft picks
after the first dozen or so cost a lot more than they are worth.
"Teams don't want to take on lower-end draft picks," Mavericks owner Mark
Cuban said. "They just cost money. It's not like they'll give us a player for
22. They don't want 22 or 20-whatever."
That could always change, of course. But for now, the Mavericks are plotting
their draft night as if they will be staying put. Even though there are teams
in the lottery looking to dump their pick, it seems unlikely the Mavericks
will move up, simply because they are in "win now" mode and draft picks
typically need a year or two or more to become prime contributors.
The Mavericks will try to improve in other ways when free agency uncorks July
1.
But the draft still is important, even if many observers see this one as
relatively weak once you get past Blake Griffin. At 22, they can expect to
take "the best player on the board," as president of basketball operations
Donnie Nelson says.
And the odds say that player will be a point guard.
"This draft is extremely deep at point guard," Nelson said.
The Mavericks aren't looking for a replacement for Jason Kidd, by the way.
They are merely in need of more options in the backcourt.
"Our team will be different," Nelson said of roster movement that is coming
this summer. "How much different, I don't know. Right now, we're looking
under every single rock."
And as for the draft?
"We're looking for another Josh Howard moment," Nelson said.
Howard will remain the standard by which late first-round draft picks are
judged for the Mavericks. The Mavs got him with the 29th pick in 2003.
This year, point guards are plentiful. The Mavericks won't be able to snag
somebody of the caliber of Ricky Rubio, Jonny Flynn, Jrue Holiday, Stephen
Curry, Tyreke Evans or Brandon Jennings. Those are the elite point guardsand
will be gone before the lottery picks are finished. But there could be as
many as a dozen point guards taken in the first round.
After the first six, it gets unpredictable. Several NBA talent appraisers
said there is so much fluidity in the middle of the first round that teams'
draft targets will change daily.
But if the Mavericks zero in on a point guard, it probably will come from a
group of five: North Carolina's Ty Lawson, Wake Forest's Jeff Teague,
Virginia Commonwealth's Eric Maynor, UCLA's Darren Collison or St. Mary's
Patty Mills.
North Carolina point guard Ty Lawson is one player the Dallas Mavericks have
their eyes on with the No. 22 pick.

Another intriguing option could be Florida's Nick Calathes, although he
already has agreed to a three-year contract with a professional team in
Greece. It's possible the Mavericks or somebody else could draft him and keep
his rights while he fulfills all or part of his contract in Greece.
What matters most to the Mavericks is finding a contributor. It can be done.
Last year's 22nd pick was Courtney Lee, who was a starter for Orlando during
much of the Magic's playoff run.
"One of the things that's really changed over the last couple of years is you
used to think if you go seven deep, you're OK," Cuban said. "But you're
really starting to see that seventh, eighth and even ninth guy has to be able
to have an impact and be able to score because the games are so close.
"If those guys can't have any impact at all, you're not going to advance.
That hurt us in Denver, and that's something we're going to try to improve
on. You need that extra scorer, and that's a point that is not lost on the
Mavs."
