The answer could come in the return on the deal if the expiring contract that
is Erick Dampier gets moved for Tyson Chandler or Samuel Dalembert. (Marcus
Camby is another interesting big man on the trade block, but there's no
reason for the Clippers to give up his expring contract to get Dampier's.)
Ryan Hollins, a restricted free agent, has potential but can't be counted on
to start for a playoff team at this point in his career. Brandon Bass and
James Singleton both contributed for stretches at center last season, but the
unrestricted free agents aren't big enough to start there on a regular basis.
If the Mavs move Dampier, they might be forced to find his replacement with
the mid-level exception. They made a mid-level mistake with Gana Diop last
summer. Let's look at the best big men on the mid-level market this summer.
Marcin Gortat: After averaging 3.8 points and 4.5 rebounds in limited minutes
behind Dwight Howard, the Polish 25-year-old is ready for a much bigger role.
Orlando GM Otis Smith has said as much, and he acknowledged that the Magic
might not be able to keep the restricted free agent. The 7-0, 240-pound
Gortat isn't a skilled offensive player, but he's a banger who runs the floor
well for a big man. The Knicks are reportedly interested in offering their
mid-level exception to him.
Chris Andersen: I'm a big fan of the Birdman's energy and athleticism. So are
the Nuggets, and the Denver Post reports that re-signing Andersen ranks as
the Western Conference finalists' top off-season priority. It's difficult to
envision him leaving Denver, where he got his second chance and has been
embraced by Nuggets fans.
Anderson Varejao: An interview with Varejao on a Brazilian blog mentioned
that he'd already received an offer from the Mavs - a violation of league
rules if true -- but that's been denied by both sides. But the 6-11,
260-pounder, who is just entering his prime at 26 years old, might be a
decent fit for the Mavs. He's a rugged role player who could be a nice
dirty-work complement to Dirk, and he runs the floor much better than Dampier.
Zaza Pachulia: The 6-11, 275-pounder averaged 12 points and eight rebounds
for the Hawks as a full-time starter a few years ago. But there's reasons he
hasn't been a full-time starter since then. He's a non-factor as a defensive
presence in the paint despite his size, having never averaged more than 0.5
blocks per game. And he's never shot 50 percent from the floor for a season.
Rasheed Wallace: He's by far the biggest name on this list, and he has by far
the most baggage. Would it be wise for the Mavs to take a risk on the
34-year-old Wallace? He has never been a great rebounder (6.9 per game
career, 7.4 last season), and he wouldn't fill their need for a low-post
scorer. Wallace is a jump shooter who cranks up a ton of 3s and shot 42
percent from the floor last season.
