‘Tis the season to overrate, covet and gossip about everybody.
I’ve got lunch with Avery Johnson, dinner with Adrian Peterson and
late-night snacks with a million rumors from NBA Shopping Night – Midnight
Madness! -- topped by a pesky suspicion that Rasheed Wallace has a crush on
the Mavs – but that if the Mavs are going to fly over the Cuckoo’s Nest,
they might as well chase Ron Artest. …
*Avery Johnson was in Dallas today. He had lunch at Bella. He says “Hi.’
’ … but he didn’t say anything about coaching the Pistons. In Detroit, they
’re saying a “source’’ insists the team has contacted The Lil’ Johnson,
who is anxious to repeat his Miracle Work in Motown by turning Michael Jackson
’s corpse into a weak-side spot-up shooter.
*So, does Ron Artest go on the market now? Is a Rockets team without Yao
Ming going to commit to Ron-Ron for $40 mil to be the best player on a
middling contender? Or do they instead decide to have a Yen for ’10? The
Artest story is right up there with the Kidd story as a sort of “first domino
’’ for this shopping period.
You will recall DallasBasketball.com reporting a year ago that the Mavs
made what they thought was a legit bid on Artest … and that they were
crushed when he instead went to Houston.
A year has past. Artest mostly played nice in Houston. Rick Carlisle can
deal with him. He’s a difference-maker … and unlike the similarly nutty ‘
Sheed, he makes mistakes while playing hard through them.
If Houston is a seller here – whether it’s Sign-and-Trade or simply the
MLE – Dallas should be a buyer.
*Word from the Magic regarding center Marcin Gortat: If anybody offers him
in excess of an MLE-type deal, Orlando will be out of the bidding.

*ESPN.com’s Chad Ford has different sources than I do. Better sources, I’
m sure. But when Chad says the Mavs like Charlie Villanueva … well, Chad

*Somebody just wrote that Jason Kidd won’t sign with Dallas until he sees
who else the Mavs sign. Um, sorry, bub. But it’s the other way around:
People aren’t going to sign with Dallas until they see that the Mavs sign
Kidd.
*The 75-Member Staff had a burrito at Primo's tonight with Adrian
Peterson. I know. ... lunch with Avery Johnson. ... dinner with Adrian
Peterson. ... we are getting hungry for breakfast but we probably won't eat
unless we can do it with a sports celeb.

*Here’s what’s troubling about ‘Sheed: He’s a HOF talent with a high
BBIQ who is capable of being Dallas’ starting center. … but who is coming
off a sleepwalk season in which he declined to a 12/7 guy who enjoyed
lollygagging 23 feet away from the basket. I mean, envisioning him being a
big help in a Mavs uniform takes a lot of projection, you know?
*All’s quiet on the Western Front: Where are the Kaman/Camby/Randolph
rumors? And won’t Donald T. Sterling be more “comfortable’’ keeping the
most Caucasian among them?
*Good news for the Mavs: The Blazers are off his scent and onto Andre
Miller’s. Talk has Portland S-n-T’ing Steve Blake to Philly for Miller.
That means one less suitor for J-Kidd.
*Boozer stays put. David Lee just got richer.
*Hedo to Toronto? That'd be a good show of faith for Bosh. Hedo to
Sacto? That'd be a waste of money for a Kings team going nowhere. ... while
flying coach.
*They're still buzzing in Detroit that even after deposing Curry, the
Pistons will end up moving out Rip Hamilton to bring in Ben Gordon. I want
Hamilton. ... and have no idea why Detroit would prefer Ben over him.
*Re Rockets' approach: If they stay in go-for-it mode, they chase Klaatu
Barada Nikto Gortat.
*The last time I suggested the Mavs would get somebody for the partial
MLE, the guy was ‘Gana Diop. … and Dallas paid him double that. So I want
to just whisper the suggestion that they try to do the same thing with Josh
Howard crony Marquis Daniels.
* When the clock strikes midnight in New York, I wonder what suit Mark
Cuban will be wearing? And I wonder what supermodel Jason Kidd will be
wearing?
