http://tinyurl.com/npeuv6 The Mavs have crossed their top two priorities off their free agency checklist, with Jason Kidd deciding to return to Dallas and Marcin Gortat agreeing to accept the Mavs' mid-level exception. Brandon Bass ought to have next, right? After all, the 24-year-old does represent the Mavs' only reliable frontcourt reserve scorer, and he's proven that he can perform under playoff pressure. Tony Dutt, Bass' agent, had talked to four teams this morning by the time I called about an hour ago. The Mavs weren't one of them, but Dutt has been in consistent contact with the folks in the Dallas front office. "We continue to talk to Brandon's agent and hope to work something out," Mark Cuban said. Dutt is continuing to talk to a lot of other teams, too. He mentioned the Bobcats, Magic, Hornets, Pistons, Blazers and Lakers (if Lamar Odom leaves) as among the possibilities. As for the Mavs ... "We're making some progress, but we're not there yet," Dutt said. "We're not there at all. All I can say is that we're making progress. I'm not going to say it's a bad offer [made by the Mavs], but it's not where we're trying to go." Here's where Bass and Dutt are trying to go: to a team that offers a deal in the five-year, $25 million range. The Charlotte Observer reported over the weekend that a team had made such an offer to Bass. Dutt confirmed that such an offer was made, but it gets kind of complicated after that. "Out of the box, we did get that offer," said Dutt, who originally hoped to get the full mid-level exception for Bass but has lowered his sights given the market. "There's things that have to make that deal happen. It can get done at that, but we're not jumping at the bit. "It's fair money. That's a good range for him. We will circle back around to the team that made that offer." There might be a better basketball fit for Bass, who won't be a starter in Dallas as long as Dirk is around. He knows his role with the Mavs will be as a power forward/undersized center who gets around 20 minutes per game. That's not bad, but it isn't exactly as exciting as, say, starting next to Dwight Howard with an Orlando team coming off a trip to the Finals. His role will be one of the things Bass considers while deciding on where he'll sign. Of course, dollar will probably top that list. And Dutt said Bass wouldn't leave Dallas without giving Cuban one last chance to open up his wallet. "We would go back to them," Dutt said, "but it would be not just matching [the offer], but bettering it." -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 114.45.175.38
