In this excerpt from the arbitration hearing transcript, Don Nelson talks
about how miserable he was his final year in Dallas as a consultant to the
Mavericks.

For that period of the time where I thought we were going to take the high
road, during that entire year it was just the opposite that I had hoped for.
Instead of the high road, it was the low road, not by me, but by Mr. Cuban. I
wasn't allowed to do anything. I wasn't allowed to go anywhere. I wasn't
allowed to be anywhere ... I did not feel welcome around the team, and for
that whole year if things would have gone the way we said they were going to
go, I wanted to be the Red Auerbach of the Dallas Mavericks. I think I
mentioned that before. That's – that was my hope.

I didn't want to coach again. I was tired of coaching. I'm still tired of
coaching, but I'm good at it. I wanted to retire as the Red Auerbach of the
Dallas Mavericks. That wasn't possible because I could see that it wasn't
going to happen that way. He [Cuban] didn't want me around. He didn't want me
on the plane. He didn't even let me stand in the tunnel during games. OK?

Now I know there – he says there is reasons. I never, ever said a bad word
about Avery Johnson to anybody. I love Avery Johnson. So that can't be the
reason I wasn't allowed in the tunnel. I wasn't allowed in the tunnel because
I was getting my face on television instead of Mark. That's the reason he
didn't want me in the tunnel, or some other reason that I don't know, but it
wasn't for any other reason.

So I was treated like [expletive], and when I said he was [expletive] on my
head, that's the year I am talking about, unrespected, no job, nothing to do,
and it ain't going to be like I wanted it to be. I am not going to be Red
Auerbach. I am not going to go around and pat asses. I am not going to do
what I thought, and I actually thought when we split we would become friends
again. That's how naive I was. None of that was going to happen.

So now I am in a situation, I'm not talking to Mark, I don't want to talk to
Mark. I got to do something else. I can't even live in the city. That's the
way I felt. He's run me out of the city I love.
