[外電] 3-point plan: Dallas Mavericks sign forward Tim Thomas

 Looking to bolster their 3-point shooting, the Mavericks announced the
signing of free agent forward Tim Thomas on Tuesday. Terms of the deal were
not disclosed.

Thomas, 6-10, 230 pounds, has made 946 3-pointers in his career, shooting
36.9 percent from beyond the arc. In 64 games with Chicago, New York and the
Clippers last season, he averaged 8.5 points in less than 20 minutes per, and
made 41.3 percent of his 3-point attempts.

"He is a really good 3-point shooter that can spread the floor for us and
will immediately make us a better 3-point shooting team," Mavericks owner
Mark Cuban said via e-mail. "Plus, he is a far better 1-on-1 post defender
than he gets credit for. His defensive points per possession in the post the
last couple years has been very good. His length and experience really pay
off."

The Mavericks have only the bi-annual exception or the veteran minimum to
offer.

"We are excited to welcome Tim to Dallas as part of the Mavericks family,"
Donnie Nelson, president of basketball operations, said in a statement. "His
versatility, post-season experience and outside shooting are valuable assets
that will fortify our bench. ... Tim has established himself as a formidable
long-range threat and we look forward to him filling that role on our roster."

Nash: Dirk will be OK: Steve Nash predicts former Mavericks teammate and
close friend Dirk Nowitzki will thrive on the court after facing
off-the-court issues since the end of the season.

"You worry for a friend when they're in a situation like that," Nash told The
Associated Press. "But I also know he'll bounce back really strong from this.
We're going to see him be a dominant player in this league for a long time.
And I think off the court this will only help him grow, mature and have a
better life."

Experience: 12 seasons

Ht./Wt.: 6-10, 230

Age: 32

Statistics: In 806 career games (407 starts), he has averaged 11.6 points and
4.6 rebounds. His best season was 2003-04 when he averaged 14.6 points for
the Knicks and Bucks. ... In 55 playoff games he has averaged 13.3 points and
5.1 rebounds while shooting 46.8 percent from the field and 43.6 from 3-point
range.

Notable: Thomas turned pro in 1997 after one season at Villanova. He was the
seventh overall selection by the Philadelphia 76ers. ... He has played for
Philadelphia, Milwaukee, New York (twice), Chicago (twice), Phoenix and the
LA Clippers.
