標題[外電] How much better are the Mavs?

The off-season isn't over. The Mavs are still shopping Greg Buckner's buyout,
which they'd like to use as the centerpiece of a package to add one more
piece to the core. But that'd be a big bonus.
For the sake of this post, let's assume the Mavs won't be able to get a deal
done. I'm also taking the liberties of assuming that James Singleton, a
scrapper who makes practices more intense if nothing else, will return for
the minimum salary and Shawne Williams will somehow be dumped. And let's look
at how their 2009-10 roster would compare to last season's squad.
CENTER
08-09: Erick Dampier, Brandon Bass, Ryan Hollins, James Singleton, Dirk
09-10: Drew Gooden, Dampier, Tim Thomas, Singleton, Dirk, Nathan Jawai
Gooden might play the bulk of the minutes in the middle. The Mavs will need
Dampier to defend the handful of traditional centers in the league, but
Gooden gives them a low-post scoring threat (12 ppg career average) who is a
solid rebounder (7.9 rpg) and can run the floor. Basically, he's a three-inch
taller version of Bass, who isn't exactly a defensive force, either. The Mavs
consider Thomas an above-average post defender who can open up the floor with
his perimeter shooting, giving them a different dimension at center. If they
thought Hollins would have had a role this season, they would have made an
effort to keep him.
POWER FORWARD
08-09: Dirk Nowitzki, Bass, Singleton
09-10: Dirk, Shawn Marion, Gooden, Thomas, Kris Humphries, Singleton, Jawai
This position will be a strength for the Mavs as long as Dirk is in his
prime. Marion, whose best seasons came as a power forward for the run-and-gun
Suns, gives Carlisle the freedom to go with an explosive smallball lineup for
stretches. Humphries is a heady player who is a better rebounder and defender
than Bass but nowhere near the offensive threat. Gooden and Thomas give the
Mavs options who can put the ball in the bucket.
SMALL FORWARD
08-09: Josh Howard, Antoine Wright, Devean George, Matt Carroll, Gerald Green
09-10: Marion, Howard, Quinton Ross, Carroll
If Marion and Howard can both stay healthy, the recent All-Stars might split
the small forward minutes down the middle, with Marion getting some time at
power forward and Howard playing about a dozen minutes per game at shooting
guard. They're both versatile players who are excellent finishers, whether
it's at the end of a fast break or cutting to the basket in halfcourt sets.
From a Mavs rotation perspective, the complicated four-team deal was Wright
for Marion, a major upgrade.
SHOOTING GUARD
08-09: Jason Terry, Wright, J.J. Barea, Carroll, Green
09-10: Jason Terry, Howard, Barea, Ross, Carroll
Howard will start here, and one of Rick Carlisle's goals during training camp
will be to figure out how to maximize Howard's effectiveness in his minutes
at the 2. Terry, the reigning Sixth Man of the Year, will play the majority
of the minutes. Barea provides an offensive sparkplug. Ross gives the Mavs a
defensive stopper.
POINT GUARD
08-09: Jason Kidd, Barea, Terry
09-10: Kidd, Barea, Rodrigue Beaubois, Terry
Kidd isn't an All-Star anymore, but he's still a top-10 point guard who
excels at distributing the ball, and he'll have more weapons at his disposal
this season. Barea, whose ability to penetrate is a nice change-up, has
developed into a solid backup. Beaubois' length and explosiveness give him a
chance to be a role player right away. If that happens, Terry won't have to
play the point, allowing him to focus on filling it up at shooting guard.
On paper, it looks like the Mavs upgraded their depth and versatility at
every position. A 50-win team that started slow and finished strong might be
a 55- or 57-win team now, which would give the Mavs a good shot at getting
homecourt advantage through the first two rounds.
There's still a gap between the Lakers and the rest of the West, but the Mavs
have positioned themselves to be at or near the top of the second tier.
把T_T歸在C會不會有點囧...
Ross感覺會被冰..
