 Dallas Mavericks guard Jason Terry took his lessons of success to Alex W.
Spence Talented/Gifted Academy in Dallas this morning and encouraged middle
school students to become more involved in digital technology.

The NBA and Hewlett-Packard have teamed up to launch a nationwide grant
competition among middle schools funded by the HP Digital Assist program.
Dallas is one of six cities competing, and Spence was among the middle
schools chosen to participate.

"We really wanted to get middle school students involved in education," said
Rawly Sanchez, Dallas ISD deputy chief of staff. "A lot of kids drop out of
school in ninth grade, but they've really ‘checked out' in middle school."

Sanchez said he hopes that support from the Mavericks will encourage students
to stay in school.

Terry spoke to students at the school's gym and gave size 12 Reebok shoes to
five students. "Whatever you want to do in life – be a doctor, lawyer,
fireman or NBA player," he said, "education is number one."

As part of the program, students will submit a digital project about math,
science or reading. The best entries will have a chance to compete for
prizes, including $75,000 in HP technology and Dallas Mavericks tickets.

The HP Digital Assist program will announce the winners in December.

Clare Kimber, an eighth grade student who wants to be an architect, heard
Terry speak. “Education gives you a head start on what you want to be,” she
said.
