Donnie Nelson (far left), the Mavericks' president of basketball operations, joined (from left) Jason Kidd, Shawn Marion, Nathan Jawai, Quinton Ross, Drew Gooden, Tim Thomas and Rick Carlisle as a new uniform was unveiled. He had a young, raw teammate on the Phoenix Suns who was just learning how good he could really be. And Kidd, as the point guard and leader of the Suns in 2001, made it his duty to cultivate the new kid. He saw Shawn Marion grow up that season. "He listened," Kidd said Monday. "You can ask him about our first playoff series with Sacramento, and he had to guard Peja [Stojakovic]. "Peja lit him up. But it was a lesson learned. What I loved about what he said at the end of that series is: That will never happen again. So I knew I had his attention and that he wanted to get better and wasn't going to be satisfied. From there, he's had a great career." Kidd knew then that Marion was somebody he could win with, which is exactly what he plans to this season. Kidd, Marion, Drew Gooden, Tim Thomas, Quinton Ross and Nathan Jawai were at American Airlines Center for an introductory news conference Monday. Training camp starts next week. Marion, the 6-7 forward the Mavericks acquired from Toronto this summer, will be starting his second run with Kidd. Marion remembers the first rendition just as well as Kidd does. "Jason was great," Marion said. "That was my second season, and it [getting lit up by an opponent] didn't happen again. I learned. The thing is, you win and lose as a team. What happened that series, I was guarding Peja Stojakovic. I'm a second-year player. Then they sent Vlade Divac and Chris Webber, and they set some of the best screens in the league at the time. "I was mad because I was on an island by myself." That's when Kidd intervened and told Marion not to worry. He wouldn't be put in that kind of situation again. "And then," Marion said, "he got traded." The reunion took awhile, but better late than never. Marion said he started his career with Kidd and he's thrilled at the prospects of ending it with him. "Why not?" he said. New look for Mavs: The team unveiled a new color scheme for one set of its uniforms. The green road uniforms now also come in a two-tone blue variety. The new duds will be worn in 15 games this season. The first will be Oct. 30 at the Los Angeles Lakers. There will be 13 road games in which they wear the new uniforms and two home games, including Nov. 7 against Toronto. Thomas set for procedure: Thomas will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee today. "It's minor," Thomas said. "I'm going to take my time and get back. And once I get back, I look forward to joining the guys and going after the ultimate goal, which is a championship." Asked how he hurt the knee, he said: "Working out. I can't ice skate." Briefly: The Mavericks had their ninth annual basketball for women night Monday at AAC with players, coaches and staff giving 225 attendees an inside look at the organization and how the game is played. ... NBA officials took a spin around AAC Monday, continuing the early planning stages for All-Star Weekend in February.
