After so many years of trying to do it the old-fashioned way with their
centers, the Mavericks now seem ready to ditch tradition.
Never mind that they may have been behind the curve on this one by a season
or five.
Faster, smaller, more athletic centers have become the norm in the NBA, with
the number of true back-to-the-basket pivot players like Yao Ming and
Shaquille O'Neal dwindling.
So the Mavericks went hard after the 6-10, 250-pound Drew Gooden this summer
and reeled in the free agent who, as he is quick to remind, started in this
league in 2002 as a small forward.
The obvious question: Where this leaves Erick Dampier? And the early answer
is: on the bench.
When Gooden, Shawn Marion and the other new Mavericks had an introductory
news conference Monday, president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson was
talking about the incoming talent and running through the starting lineup
when he added: "you've got a runner like no other in Drew Gooden that can get
up and down the court with the best of them [as a center] ... and then you
got Erick Dampier coming off the bench and giving you that role that you
need."
Eyes quickly raised around the room. Dampier started all 80 games he played
last season and has started 309 of 369 games in five seasons with the
Mavericks. Dampier helped the Mavericks to the NBA Finals in 2006 and has
been functional as a defender and rebounder although his numbers have never
convinced critics.
Nelson amended his comment after the news conference, saying that Gooden's
presence gives the Mavericks options to go big against bigger teams with
Dampier and smaller against teams that don't play a traditional center.
Dampier, 34, said he's going to approach training camp, which opens Monday,
the same way he does every year.
"I'm not going to jump to conclusions," he said. "I have an open mind and if
they're saying it [the starting job] is up for grabs, we'll both work hard
for it and see who wins.
"I think I have another two or three years of being a starter. I don't know
what they're thinking is going to be. We're not just going to give something
away. You have to go out there and work for it. Make both of us work for it."
Gooden, who turned 28 on Thursday, doesn't necessarily view himself as a
full-time center. But he's willing to adapt.
"I came into this league as a [small forward]," he said. "Now, I spent last
year starting at [center] for Chicago. At this point in my career, I've
played against pretty much everybody, and I think I can adjust."
Dampier added that the versatility Gooden provides should help the Mavericks,
even if it means a different role for him during a contract season.
"Other teams are playing small at the five [center], so it depends on what
the matchup calls for," Dampier said. "We've had a core for the last four or
five years and we've had a tremendous run, getting to the Finals, and we know
what it's like to get there.
"We're not the youngest group in the league anymore, but we're just as good
as anybody else."
And unlike recent years, they'll have the option of junking tradition at the
center position, if they so choose.
