Honestly, the defense didn't seem all that terrible last year, but coach Rick
Carlisle has the numbers to make his point.
And his point is that the defense must get better or the Mavericks have no
chance of improving overall.
Last season, the Mavericks lost nearly 80 percent of the time when they shot
below 45 percent.
"That's a horrible number,'' Carlisle said.
"We're a team that has to get more dependent on our defensive system and less
dependent on our shot-making to ensure that we can win games. If you see that
number -- 7-27 in games where you don't shoot 45 percent -- it's miraculous
that we won 50 games.''
The good news is that Carlisle has seen the defense improve already in camp.
Having better defenders is the first step. But they also have applied
themselves better in the scrimmages so far.
We'll see if that's the case tonight in the annual Fan Jam scrimmage at AAC.
