Erick Dampier has played 369 games for the Mavericks and started 309 of them.
He’s been the man in the middle at the start of games almost all the time in
his five seasons here. That’s going to change this year. He and Drew Gooden
are essentially co-starters at center.
And Dampier is OK with it, even though it’s an important season for him
financially.
Coach Rick Carlisle has said he will start Dampier against "the monsters,"
which includes the likes of Shaquille O’Neal, who will be in town Saturday
night when Cleveland visits. That qualifies as dirty work.
But Dampier, while not usually the player Mavericks fans want him to be, is
not complaining. He’s in the final year of his contract and what he earns next
season will be determined largely by what he shows this season.
"I don’t think it’s a bad thing," he said Thursday. "The last couple years I
split minutes and at some point in time, your minutes are going to go down.
Whenever I’m called upon, I just have to go out there and make the most of it.
"I’m not really worried about it. I guess the main thing for us is to win at
this point. Drew’s a good player and a good person. It’s been working for us
No one is unhappy. No one has said anything about it. Winning takes care of a
lot of things."
Where this resolve will get tested will be when the season goes through a rough
spell. But for now, the tag-team centers are working.
