 SACRAMENTO – Drew Gooden might just be starting to like his life as an NBA
center.

He's certainly giving the Mavericks plenty of options by bringing a yin to
Erick Dampier's yang.

Gooden playing center is a product of the new NBA. There just aren't that
many big, strong centers who have the prototypical body. They're all cut from
a smaller mold these days, like Phoenix's Amare Stoudemire or Denver's Nene.
So Gooden can survive in the paint. And his offensive game is so good that
the Mavericks can lean on Gooden for production.


Saturday night was a great example. Gooden, with a build more suited for
power forward, again split time with Dampier. And in the first half, he had
six points and five rebounds.

He also had a gorgeous assist to a fast-breaking J.J. Barea for a layup
during the Mavericks' second-quarter getaway. In the timeout after that,
Barea gave Gooden a playful pat on the shoulder, and you could tell he was
appreciative of Gooden's play.

Gooden doesn't play quite the defense that Dampier can. Nor does he set picks
like Dampier. But he is a lot more capable offensively.

It's worth remembering that Mavericks president Donnie Nelson said before
training camp that Gooden was tentatively viewed as the starting center. That
changed as the preseason went along and Dampier provided the defense and
toughness.

But with Gooden, the options are plentiful.
