Carlisle on Dallas Mavericks' 131-96 loss: 'It's just embarrassing'

LOS ANGELES – It was the kind of SoCal day you dream about – sun-splashed,
warm and a faint breeze fluttering the palms.
It would have been a perfect Sunday for the Mavericks if they hadn't had to
play that darn basketball game.
That little detail turned out to be quite bothersome. Clearly intent on
erasing the memory of an early-season loss to the Mavericks on their home
floor, the Los Angeles Lakers plowed under the visitors in quick order and
rolled to a 131-96 statement-making victory at Staples Center.
It was a complete fiasco by the Mavericks, who finished 2-2 on their road
trip that was broken up with two idle days at home after the Dec. 27 win at
Denver.
The Lakers' size gave the Mavericks trouble. But so did their little people,
too.
"It was Easter," Shawn Marion said. "We laid an egg."
They can take some solace in the fact that their A game was nowhere to be
found. In fact, their B, C and D games were missing, too.
That size problem reared its head often as Andrew Bynum made all eight of his
shots – short jump-hooks or spin moves for layups – finishing with 19
points. But he had lots of help.
Lamar Odom did his thing with 15 points and 15 rebounds, and Jordan Farmar
had 12 first-half points off the bench when the Lakers were steadily pulling
away.
Kobe Bryant scored 15 points, and the Lakers didn't even need that to plant,
by far, the worst loss of the season on the Mavs, who'd lost by 16 twice
before.
"It's just embarrassing, and we all own it," coach Rick Carlisle said. "They
played great, and we played terrible. It was atypical of the year so far, and
it's very disappointing. It's the first time all year when we didn't put up
the fight we needed."
The Mavericks should have known they were in trouble when the Lakers turned
the ball over on three of their first four possessions. Coach Phil Jackson
called timeout quickly, as if to say: Come on guys, let's get serious.
And so, they did.
After leading 4-2, the Mavericks were outscored 28-9 in the rest of the
opening quarter. After that, the Lakers simply took great delight in making a
statement that the Mavericks shouldn't get any ideas about having the Lakers'
number.
That 94-80 decision they won at Staples in late November is nothing but a
memory.
"They remembered when we came here before," said J.J. Barea. "Now we got to
remember this. We have to forget it and move on, but remember it, because
we'll see them soon."
The Lakers come to Dallas on Jan. 13.
Dampier sidelined: Erick Dampier was suffering from a left-knee effusion,
which means he had a fluid buildup.
He was put on the inactive list, and Drew Gooden started in his place,
putting the Mavericks at an even greater size disadvantage.
Dampier said it was wear and tear on his knee. "I'll be back Tuesday," he
said.
Dirk getting close: When he plays against Detroit on Tuesday, it will be Dirk
Nowitzki's 873rd game as a Maverick, which will push him past Derek Harper
for second on the all-time Mavericks' list. He'll probably pass Brad Davis
(883) later this month.
Nowitzki also is closing in on his 20,000th point, which should come sometime
next week.
