http://tinyurl.com/yf9vj96 Drew Gooden missed a lot of shots in the last two games as the Mavericks' starting center. Air balls. Botched layups and tips. Enough hard-luck, point-blank lipouts to frustrate the bejabbers out of pretty much anyone. Gooden isn't pretty much anyone. He didn't get mad. He got even by getting the ball back. "There's some nights when you're right there and you tip it and tip it and the damn thing won't go in," coach Rick Carlisle said Wednesday. "A lot of guys get discouraged in those situations. But he gets even more determined. Our team feeds off that, and it helps us and gets our crowd involved. "I love the way he pursues the ball. Whether it's in the air off the rim or on the floor, he's after it." Which is something Gooden takes considerable pride in. The glass-half-empty folks will zero in on his 4-for-16 shooting in Tuesday's victory over Detroit. But his nine offensive rebounds – 18 overall – came against an old rival, Ben Wallace, and confirmed to the 6-10 Gooden why he is a key piece of the Mavericks' puzzle. "I missed a lot of shots, but I got back to them," he said. "I did what I had to do. I felt like I was working extremely hard to get in position. That's half the battle. My job is to get the ball back for us. "But I think I was working so hard I rushed them a little once I got the rebound. I just need a little pace to my game." Actually, the Mavericks are just fine with Gooden's pace, which has allowed him to average eight points and 7.1 rebounds in 21.8 minutes per game. His numbers have been markedly better in the 10 games he's started. However, it's the 20 games in which he's come off the bench that have impressed his coaches and teammates. Gooden is a career starter. Being a reserve is foreign territory for him, and nobody was sure how he would take to it. But, factoring in the fewer minutes he plays off the bench, the numbers are relatively similar. "I love the way he's taken the challenge of coming off the bench," Carlisle said. "He and I have talked about the challenge of being an energizer, a rebounder, a defender off the bench. It's a different type of challenge for him. He's worked at it hard and he's had some real impact games for us." Against Denver last week, Gooden came off the bench to hit all eight of his shots and finish with 19 points and 10 rebounds. But Gooden's real worth is this: Imagine where the Mavericks would be without him, considering starter Erick Dampier has missed 10 games with various aches and illnesses. Slow starts addressed: The Mavericks have fallen behind consistently in the first quarter recently, and Wednesday's practice focused almost exclusively on offense. "Frankly, we haven't played at a level we need to in terms of energy and disposition," Carlisle said. "We're a good team. If we play that way in the second half, I think we can probably play that way in the first half, too." Dead giveaway: The new Shawn Marion bobblehead was making the rounds at practice, and a film crew for the Mavericks' TV show was asking if anybody could identify it without looking at the number or name. Carlisle got it right away. "You could tell by the way it was a high-energy bobblehead," he said.
