Dallas Mavericks guard Jason Terry talked on The Herd on ESPN radio on
Friday to discuss the NBA championships and the final destination of LeBron
James. Here are some highlights:
If you’re the coach of the Boston Celtics, who do you put on Kobe?
Well, you might want to try a number of different strategies but none of them
are going to work. Kobe is a guy that is determined right now; you can see it
on his face. You can see it after they received the Western Conference
trophy. I mean, a lot of guys on that Lakers team kind of had that stone
faced look, like they had unfinished business to do. This, I think, is Kobe’
s year. He’s not going to be denied, whatever they do. They could bring Bill
Russell out of retirement but nobody is going to stop Kobe this series.
How valuable is Andrew Bynum in the big picture for the Lakers?
You just send him to Dallas, and we’ll welcome him with open arms. This
fella can play and he’s still young. Though he’s had a couple of injuries,
we’ll take him in Dallas, so whoever they got over there, any of the buses
want to send him over, we’re ready.
But, I think the big key is while Bynum is playing well, it’s Pau Gasol. I
mean, over the last four years since he’s come to the Lakers, he’s been a
great impact player for them. Without him, they’re nowhere near the finals.
No, they don’t even make it.
Does it feel like this is Boston’s last championship team with this group of
guys?
Well, you never know. They made a move five, six years ago that helped them
so they can actually make another move and do it again because they have some
nice pieces to get back to the championship level. But they’re strong willed
– those Big 3 that they have, keeping those guys together and Rondo, look at
what Rondo’s done throughout his career. He’s become one of the best point
guards in this league, defensively. He worked on his offensive game in the
summer and we’re going to talk about him being up there with [Steve] Nash,
Chris Paul and Deron Williams. I like their team but with those guys not
getting any younger, they may have to make a move this summer.
Where do you think LeBron James is going to end up?
Well, LeBron, if you’re in this for championships, like we all say we are,
then you’re either going to Boston, L.A., San Antonio or Dallas. Those are
the teams you’re going to go to; I’ll throw Denver in there for name’s
sake. Those are the teams you’re going to go and realistically have a shot
to win it. You go to any of those other teams, you’re going to be sitting at
home like you are now. So you better say you’re in it for a championship and
you’re in it for the money. Cleveland gives you the best opportunity for
both, so I think LeBron is staying home.
