The best coach the Mavericks ever had is now a New Jersey Net.
And his winning percentage is on its way down.
Avery Johnson has to be considered the best Mavs coach based on his regular
season winning percentage (.735) which is merely the best of all time. And
because he is the only coach ever to take the franchise to the NBA Finals.
On the other hand, what started so well for Don Nelson's replacement ended
badly. In fact, it ended badly three years in a row with Johnson's teams
losing 12 out of their last 15 playoff games -- four to Miami, four of 6 to
Golden State, four of five to New Orleans.
And now the coach who kept the reigns on a young Devin Harris finds himself
coaching a team led by Devin Harris.
Actually, Harris is supposed to be excited about the move and I think it's
fair to say Johnson can learn from his mistakes in Dallas.
Still, it's hard to imagine the Nets making a huge jump after a 12-70 season.
Win 20 more games this year? Mabye if they get a good free agent to go with
Harris and Brook Lopez. Win 30 more games and challenge for the final playoff
spot?
Not unless that free agent is named LeBron or Dwyane.
Avery Johnson is very clearly a good coach. That much was evident when he
took over the Mavericks and the team immediately stepped up its defensive
play. It was evident when the team beat the defending champion Spurs in the
second round of '06, still the biggest achievement in franchise history.
The fact that Johnson "lost" the team in hindsight does not look as damaging
as it once did. Those Mavericks had a number of players that were easily
"lost."
Now Johnson's going to have to get used to losing regular season games,
something he didn't suffer in Dallas.
