http://tinyurl.com/2bk37kl Jason Kidd has done almost everything in his 16-year NBA career, but one thing he's never done consistently could be in his future. The Mavericks point guard said Monday that he'd be OK with coming off the bench in at least some of the games in 2010-11 if it helps accelerate the growth of young point guard Roddy Beaubois. Kidd as a sixth man? Maybe not all the time, but it's a notion Kidd is comfortable with. "I hope that's what we're shooting for, to develop Roddy and to give him more minutes," Kidd said. "I wouldn't be against coming off the bench some nights if it means Roddy continues to grow. "The more minutes he can get now, the better it is for us, not only in the long term, but in the short term, too." Speaking on a conference call for the American Century Championship golf tournament at Lake Tahoe, Nev., next month, Kidd said he has no problem with a reduction in his playing time, provided Beaubois continues to develop like the Mavericks expect. Kidd played 36 minutes per game last season, ranking him 33rd in the league. He played in 80 games. Because he played so many games, he was 20th in total minutes played He also was hampered by several ailments during the playoffs against San Antonio, although there's no evidence that the physical problems were connected to an abundance of minutes during the 82-game regular-season grind. Kidd has been a starter in all but 13 of the 1,187 regular-season games he's played. Only three reserve appearances have come in the past 10 seasons. Coach Rick Carlisle said he's hoping to slice Kidd's minutes by an as-yet-undetermined amount next season, when the future hall of famer turns 38. "We've got guys willing to sacrifice for us to win, so I'm not surprised Jason offered to come off the bench at times," Carlisle said. "The big key is to get Jason's minutes down and make sure Roddy is prepared to step up and consistently produce in a more prominent role." Kidd has been allowing his body to recuperate from a rugged season, which ended in a first-round loss to the Spurs. Briefly: The Mavericks will begin working out members of this year's draft class today, bringing in a handful of players daily. Among those who will work out in the coming days: UTEP's Derrick Caracter, Tennessee's Wayne Chism and Duke's Brian Zoubek. ... Erick Dampier has been working out regularly in the Mavs' weight room and should soon return to on-court workouts after undergoing knee surgery last month.
