http://tinyurl.com/283oh24 LAS VEGAS – The NBA is a league in which more than 70 percent of the players are black. Guard Jeremy Lin became a star at Harvard after his first choice, Stanford, didn't offer him a scholarship. According to studies, about 10 percent of the players are white and from the United States. The rest were born on foreign soil. None are of Asian descent and were born in America. Jeremy Lin is trying to change that. Being the first of anything is never easy. Lin has discovered that during a basketball career that took him from being a top California high school player to Harvard because nobody offered him a scholarship. The 6-4 guard is in the Mavericks' summer league camp and heads to Las Vegas today with the team that will compete in the NBA's off-season proving ground. Lin remains a long way from playing in the NBA. At this point, he's merely trying to get invited to training camp, his next step toward securing an NBA contract. It's a tough battle. But tough battles are nothing new for Lin. He's been through a lot, including some extreme trash talk from fans and opponents in college. He quit counting the times he endured insensitive racial comments on the court. "In the beginning, I wouldn't say I was really expecting some of the things they said," Lin says. "But I got used to it and it's fine now. I understand they're trying to get into their opponent's head and stuff like that." Being of Chinese descent, Lin has gained confidence from the fact two players born in China, Yao Ming and Yi Jianlian, have carved out nice careers in the NBA. And he's been received with rave reviews so far in the Mavericks' camp. "He's opened my eyes," said Mavericks staff member Monte Mathis, coach of the summer league team. "He's deceptively athletic and knows how to play. He's just got to get the shot together a little. But he guards and stays in front of people. He's a dark horse in my eyes right now." In the first two days of camp, Lin has shown quickness and an ability to get to the basket. Those traits made him a three-time all Ivy League choice for Harvard, where he averaged 16.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game as a senior. Which is why Lin had numerous NBA teams chasing him as an undrafted free agent. He said the Mavericks showed interest as far back as April, and they called as soon as the draft ended. Now Lin is focused on his main objective – becoming the first American-born Asian in the league. "I'm trying not to think too much about it, to be honest," he says. "If it happens, I'll definitely think about it. But right now, I'm just trying to get a team to want me."
