Firepower in the starting lineup theoretically increases greatly if Roddy Beaubois starts at shooting guard and Butler starts at small forward with Marion bringing energy and defense off the bench. As discussed in Tuesday's edition on the shooting guards, moving Marion to the bench for really the first time in his 12-year career might not go over so well with the Matrix. Marion didn't appreciate his reduced role in the Spurs series and he clearly still sees himself as a starter in this league. But, Butler is by far a more explosive scorer. Recent seasons suggest Butler will average six to eight more than Marion, while rebounding about equally. Butler provides the better half-court option, able to face-up his defender and shoot over him. Marion is mostly an in-transition scorer. He almost never shoots the 3, a shot he made consistently with the Suns. Most likely to step up: Butler, 30, is in a contract year and this is likely his last chance to cash in with a significant contract. He's made it known on his Tweeter feed that he's put a lot of time into his offseason workouts and plans to come to training camp lighter and quicker. He knows he might not last the season with the Mavs because his $10.8-million expiring contract is a valuable trade asset if the Mavs can find that available superstar they so dearly covet by the February trade deadline. It would seem highly likely that Butler will get back to his comfort zone and start the season at small forward, and he'll be primed to have a big, big year. Most likely to step back: Marion, 32, is likely headed to the bench and it will be a bitter pill for him to swallow. Marion is nothing if not confident and he loves to swagger. He still believes he's a prime performer, but his scoring average has dipped to 12.0 points the last two seasons. Although he shot better than 50 percent from the floor last season, Marion hasn't been the same offensive force since leaving Phoenix in the middle of the 2007-08 season. He'll be asked to play a reserve role -- perhaps playing about the 24 minutes he averaged in the playoff series -- backing up Bulter as well as Dirk Nowitzki at power forward. Marion has four years and more than $30 million left on his contract, so he's almost impossible to deal. How he handles a potential reserve role and fewer minutes will be interesting to watch on the court as well as in the locker room.
