Position: Shooting guard
Personnel: Caron Butler (6-7, 228), Roddy Beaubois (6-2, 170), Jason Terry
(6-2, 180), Dominique Jones (6-4, 215), DeShawn Stevenson (6-5, 218)
Outlook: For now, we'll consider Butler a shooting guard, the position he
started at when he came to Dallas in the February trade. It's a big season
for Butler, who enters a contract year and he's made it known on his Twitter
feed that he's serious about his offseason conditioning and coming into
training camp a little lighter and quicker. His future with the Mavs is
unclear. His $10.8 million expiring contract is a huge trade asset that could
be accessed from now until the trade deadline in February.
Beaubois is the
wild card. The sense is the Mavs want to make him the starter, which would
allow Butler to slide over to small forward, where he is clearly more
comfortable. However, that could create friction with Shawn Marion, who the
Mavs would like to bring off the bench. Again, how well Beaubois adjusts to
playing at least 25 minutes a game will dictate how coach Rick Carlisle
handles this crowded position. Terry is another intriguing story. He's had
two poor postseasons and he's also coming off a mediocre regular season by
his standards. His low point came in Game 6 against the Spurs when he went
scoreless through three quarters and failed to produce in the fourth quarter
when Carlisle removed the red-hot Beaubois in favor of the veteran Terry.
The
Jet has an interesting clause in his contract in which if he plays fewer than
1,500 minutes next season, the guaranteed money on the final year on his
contract, 2011-12, is drastically reduced, making him more tradeable. The
rookie Jones could also push Terry for minutes if Jones can improve his
outside shooting to go with his playmaking abilty in getting to the rim and
drawing fouls -- qualities the Mavs sorely lack. Stevenson can't expect more
than spot duty. His $4.8-million expiring contract is also attractive as part
of trade.
Most likely to step up: Obviously,
Beaubois is the guy that the club is
focused on to spice up the offense. Beaubois has flashed phenomenal quickness
and the ability to drive at will, as well as possessing a silky jumper and
3-point range. He'll have to balance playing shooting guard against defenders
that now know him and will be pumped to check him, as well as backing up the
point, where he still is not entirely comfortable. Stepping out an a limb a
bit, the rookie Jones could provide a significant jolt. He's humble and
hard-working, but it's his hard drives that has Mavs coaches most excited.
Yes, it is difficult for rookies to carve out minutes. Yes, shooting guard is
incredibly competitive on this team. But, if Jones exerts himself as a scorer
-- and he also showed an innate ability to drive and dish to the right guy at
the right time in summer league, as well as play solid defense -- he could be
the surprise of the season.
Most likely to step back: Terry has hit numerous big shots over his six
seasons in Dallas and he's always been one of the most fan-friendly and
community-minded players around.
However, his 3-point shooting percentage the
last two seasons dipped to its lowest point since his days in Atlanta. His
playoff scoring average has dropped in each of the past three seasons, down
to 12.7 last year, and his postseason shooting percentage slipped to under 40
percent the past two seasons. As a one-dimensional player, Terry shot just
43.8 percent overall last season, his lowest percentage since 2003-04.
The
Mavs are determined to play Beaubois and Jones could also earn minutes.
Somewhere minutes will have to be cut and Terry would seem to be a prime
candidate. He's averaged at least 30.0 minutes in each season in Dallas, so
how he handles a reduction, and possibly a drastic one, will be interesting
even though he's consistently been a team player. Of course, all Terry has to
do to keep his minutes up is knock down shots.

Marion
所以減少他上場時間或是改變他角色
用Carlisle喜歡的球員
