'Melo To The Mavs? It's Funeral Time For That Idea

    At DallasBasketball.com, we try to do things way outside the box. And
hey, give us credit, we’re doing it again. ... by crushing a concept of our
own making before it gets any legs.

    In a blink-of-an-eye time after we prop up the question of
Carmelo-Anthony-to-the-Mavs, we keep thinking … and quickly shoot it down
dead. The “Mavs Amateur GM’’ piece on the idea was fun. But the report
that Fish and I did for FOXSportsSouthwest.com is effectively its killer.
When a Mavs trade won’t happen, it’s just as important to illustrate why
not as it was to illustrate why it could, should or will.

   So let me re-state why Carmelo-to-the-Mavs is such an unrealistic idea.

   First, make no mistake. I'd love to have ‘Melo in Dallas. In many ways,
given his superior scoring ability on the wing and his size, I can even make
an argument that he’d be a better complement to Dirk than LeBron might have
been.

    But here's the catch.

    Denver’s problem with Carmelo is a contract that can end after the
2010-11 season, at which time ‘Melo can choose his own destination. The
Knicks, with cap room available, seem to be his focus.

     In light of what happened to Cleveland with LeBron, the Nuggets face a
huge risk of losing him for nothing. That alone is their incentive to trade
him.

     However, for teams like Dallas and any others who might have an interest
in his services (and we figure that’s pretty much all of them), that creates
a dilemma. While everyone wants him, no team wants to give up the trade value
it would take to get him, and then see him run to New York next summer.

     A blockbuster package sacrificed for a one-year rent-a-player? Dallas
will not do that. Likely, no team will.

     So if Denver is to get top compensation (and if Dallas or any other team
is going to chase a trade for him with strong value), the deal must include a
‘Melo extension, which means it's done with his cooperation. Otherwise, a
trade is simply asking another team instead of Denver to get LeBron’ed next
summer.

     In other words, this has to become a Kevin Garnett-like deal. That means
‘Melo is in the middle of the negotiating, and he has to take a look at the
ensuing landscape and decide that Dallas (or wherever) will be the place he
wants to stay. Without that, any of the millions of theoretical trade offers
anyone can devise is meaningless.

是不是喜歡他可能的新東家。只要melo老大不爽，大家都拿他沒輒。


   Fun, and part of what we do here. But meaningless.

    It has to be noted that, if such a trade came together, the extension
itself isn't merely a promise; it can formally be part of the trade. The NBA
has a little-known provision in the rules, one that allows an
Extend-and-Trade that works the very same way a Sign-and-Trade does. ‘Melo
would first sign an extension with Denver, one conditioned on his trade to
some specified team within 48 hours.

    If he picks (or approves) Dallas as an Extend-and-Trade destination? Then
both teams have massive urgency to do a deal. Dallas has an opportunity to
get a perimeter superstar alongside Dirk, and Denver has the chance to get
value.

    The compensation itself is fairly easy to figure, starting with Caron
Butler (the core of the money match, an expiring contract, and a two-time
All-Star who plays the same position and can be marketed to the fan base and
team as such) and adding essentially whatever additional $3-5M in talent the
Nuggets want added (presumably a package of young players with potential such
as Roddy B, DoJo, Mahinmi and Ajinca plus some draft picks and perhaps cash).

    But the key to making it happen wouldn't be about the details of the
offer itself. It would be about where Carmelo is willing to go – and then
stay. If Denver is willing to make a deal, getting Carmelo wanting to stay in
Dallas would be the primary issue in negotiating the deal.

   DB.com and other outlets have made it pretty clear that – at least to
this point - ‘Melo is in a New York State of Mind. For now, that’s how it
is and it takes the Mavs completely out of the equation. So I’m applauding
our efforts in giving birth to an idea … while at the same time planning the
funeral for it.


但是最重要的來了。天知地知你知我知，melo現在心整個都向著紐約。

光是這一點，小牛就可以說是連交易的邊都摸不到了。
