Hi again,
Last time I blogged here I said I was going to be working out with Tim
Grover. I was hardly an exception among NBA guys. Also working with Grover
were Dwyane Wade, Gilbert Arenas, Michael Finley, Will Bynum and Devin
Harris. But the list goes on and on. Different guys do different things
there. I have been focusing on explosiveness and improving some of the things
I need to improve to help the Mavericks this year.
I’ve been in touch with many of my teammates in Dallas during the summer. It
’s key to have that kind of camaraderie, so I’ve been shooting the breeze
with pretty much everybody these months. I’ve been in contact a lot with our
French guy Roddy Beaubois, even checking some of his games at the Vegas
Summer League. That kid is going to be good. Huge upside and even some star
potential.
Myself, I’m going to be in a contract season this year. Sometimes you see
players change their game a little bit when they are going to become free
agents because they try too hard to showcase their skills. I don’t think that
’s going to happen here. This is a veteran team where we mostly have
collective goals. Obviously, the title is the goal for us. I’m just going to
be who I am. I’m hoping to have a monster season and that, for me, means
winning a lot of games. If that happens, everything else will be taken care
of.
I’m really looking forward to this season. I’m not really looking forward
to all the traveling and spending so much time away from my wife, my kids and
the rest of my family. It gets tough for a person like me, but there’s some
sacrifices you have to make in order to be successful in this business.
Obviously, one of the most interesting things to see this season in the NBA
is the Big Three in Miami. There’s been a lot of venom directed at LeBron
James for the decision he made. I’m not going to fall for that. I’ve been
always been a big fan of LeBron the player, but I like the LeBron the person
even more. For a guy that has reached his magnitude as a player, he’s been
pretty humble and respectful.
I have no idea why NBA players get more criticized for the stuff they do
than, say, NFL players. What I know is for every wrong NBA players do, there’
s 1,000 rights. We have so many good people in the brotherhood of the NBA
trying to do positive things in the community… I don’t understand why we
have such a negative image in some circles.
