 The Mavericks, once the laughingstock of professional sports, now bore us
with their consistency.

They have won at least 50 games each of the last 10 seasons, something only
three other franchises have ever accomplished. Three times, they have won 60
or more games.

The Mavs have been to the playoffs each of the last 10 seasons, advancing to
the NBA Finals in 2006. Their owner, Mark Cuban, is without question
committed to winning, though it's hard to think his constant criticism of
officials doesn't hurt the club just a little.

The collective reaction from Mavs fans? Yawn.

You know the reason. Of the four teams to win 50 games at least 10 years in a
row, the Mavs are the only one without some championship hardware to show for
their consistent excellence.

There's hardly any buzz around Dallas about the Mavs starting training camp.
Fans, it seems, have been emotionally drained by the Mavs. Their cup runneth
over with frustration. Or disappointment.

And it doesn't matter whether you're talking about the Mavs in Uptown, the M
Streets, Addison or south of the Trinity River. Ask folks what they think
about the Mavs this season and the reaction is strikingly similar: They'll
win 50 games and lose in the first or second round of the playoffs.

Just like last season, when the Mavs won 55 games, finished second in the
Western Conference and lost in six games to San Antonio.

Ouch.

It's up to Rick Carlisle and his team to give fans a reason to get
emotionally connected again.

The start of training camp is a time of optimism for any franchise in any
sport. Dirk Nowitzki . Jason Kidd. Jason Terry . Caron Butler. Even newcomer
Tyson Chandler.

To a man, they're echoing each other. According to them, 2010 is a
championship or bust season.

Again.

"I'm here for the long run," Dirk said. "I have four more years to reach our
goal. My goal is to win a championship."

Frankly, that's hard to imagine.

The Lakers, two-time defending champions, are big and long, and Kobe Bryant
remains the world's best player and finisher. Oklahoma City, with Kevin
Durant, seems better poised to challenge the Lakers.

And you can't ignore Denver if Carmelo Anthony remains a Nugget, or the
Spurs, who are seemingly always in contention.

Still, it's easy to picture the Mavs among the NBA's elite with this roster.

Carlisle makes everyone earn his playing time. If your name isn't Dirk or
Kidd, minutes must be earned through hard-nosed defense and efficient
offensive production.

There's zero wrong with that.

Carlisle likes this team and its ability to ultimately match up with the
Lakers because of its versatility.

He can go huge with Brendan Haywood at center, Chandler at power forward and
Dirk at small forward. He can go physical with Shawn Marion at shooting guard
and Butler at small forward.

He can even go small with Terry at point guard and Roddy Beaubois at shooting
guard. The possibilities are endless, giving Carlisle an opportunity to
dictate how the game is played.

But it will only work if the players can suppress their egos and figure out a
way to handle Carlisle's allotment of minutes, because we all know some guys
will play 35 minutes one night and 10 the next.

Some players, such as Chandler and Marion who have been starters the bulk of
their careers, might have to come off the bench. It can be a difficult
adjustment.

"I came here to compete for a ring," Chandler said. "Once you have a common
goal, you can swallow your ego for the common goal because if you get a
chance to hoist that trophy you'll know you had a part in it."

That sounds good. It always does this time of year.
