Mavericks day in camp: Heat was interested in Mavs' Haywood

Spotlight on ... Brendan Haywood: If you thought re-signing Brendan Haywood
was a slam-dunk this summer, think again. The 7-foot center had at least one
interesting suitor when the free-agent gates opened. "I had to take a little
notice when Pat Riley came to Charlotte," he said. "That kind of got my
attention." Riley, Miami's president and part-owner, can do that. But at the
time of his visit, nobody knew the Heat would pull off its bid for Chris Bosh
and LeBron James. "We talked to them the whole time," Haywood said. "But I
don't think anybody knew" about James and Bosh. And if he had known, would it
have made a difference? "I don't think financially that was an option," said
Haywood, who signed a long-term extension starting at $6.9 million this
season. "I'm happy to be here."

News of the day: As the Mavericks went through one lengthy practice
Wednesday, coach Rick Carlisle continued to be impressed with the depth of
his team. There are 17 players on the roster, and everyone except rookie
Dominique Jones and Adam Haluska has started in the NBA. "I'm very certain
that there's going to be teams calling us about trade possibilities once they
start seeing some of these younger guys playing exhibition games," Carlisle
said.

He said it: "I'm the bigger presence. He's more like the athletic, energy,
up-and- down-the-court, take-the-lob- out-of-nowhere type who can get the
crowd excited."

Briefly: The staggered workouts will go back to two sessions today at SMU.
