Mavericks forced to play a waiting game with Dirk Nowitzki's injury 12:28 PM CST on Friday, January 14, 2011 By EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News http://tinyurl.com/62slqpk SAN ANTONIO – Another day goes by. Dirk Nowitzki runs circles around the court and works on strengthening and agility exercises for his sprained right knee. Everybody continues to wonder when the Mavericks' star will be back in uniform, and while it's a hot topic, Tyson Chandler wants to make sure everybody keeps this in perspective. "We're not winning the championship right now," Chandler said Thursday after practice at Trinity University. And, largely because of their outrageous 24-5 record before Nowitzki's injury, they aren't losing the championship right now, either, no matter what happens tonight against the league's best team, the San Antonio Spurs. "It's not frustrating at all because I want him to be healthy," Chandler said of the uncertainty about Nowitzki. "I'm in this thing for the long haul. As tough as it is to take losses – and I'm a very passionate person and I take every loss personally – I would much rather have him down the stretch when it counts. This is not the playoffs." That's a strong voice of reason. And until Nowitzki is actually back in the starting lineup, the Mavericks have to focus not on his recovery, but on who's healthy and how they can figure out ways to rectify the 2-6 record they've suffered through in his absence. "Dirk increases his workouts every day, and signs are positive," coach Rick Carlisle said. "But it's very important that we focus on the guys we have available at this time and make sure that he gets back absolutely 100 percent healthy. "We've listed him day-to-day because we don't believe this is a serious injury, and he is making progress. On the other hand, we're going to maintain an extremely cautious posture on this going forward and like everyone else, we want him to be back 100 percent healthy as soon as possible. We'll let you know when he's going to play. It could be very soon. It could be awhile." The Mavericks are in complete agreement that there is only one way they can dig out of this predicament – short of Nowitzki returning. They have to revert back to their defensive instincts that served them well in the first two months of the season. The loss of Nowitzki has been ironic for the Mavericks in that the impact from his injury has been felt as harshly on defense as it has on offense. The man once known as Irk because he had "no D," is getting accolades in his absence because the Mavericks can't stop opponents at the same rate they did with him on the floor. "With Dirk scoring, you get to set your defense up," Jason Kidd said. "When a guy like Dirk is on the floor, the other team has to expend a lot of energy trying to get him to pass the ball or concentrate on him [defensively]. And defensively, he understands where to be. He might not be the fastest guy, but he has great hands on the swipe [against drivers], and he's 7-feet." The other aspect of the defensive equation is that every other Maverick feels like he has to do more at the offensive end to help make up for Nowitzki's absence. Therefore, the tendency is to rest on defense. That has been the Mavericks' biggest problem during the last two weeks. "Good defense is going to help your offense. That's just a universal fact," Carlisle said. "We got to keep focusing on the one thing that we said was going to be the key to our season, and that was defense." It's not easy. Against Indiana on Wednesday, the Mavericks worked hard defensively and put the Pacers in numerous tough situations with the shot clock winding down. But they got burned several times on a well-defended shot that fell or an Indiana offensive rebound. Shooting star : Jason Kidd passed former Maverick Dale Ellis for No. 3 all time on the NBA's 3-point shooting list. So does he have No. 2 Ray Allen of the Celtics in his sights? "No, that's too far away," he said. "I stayed around long enough to make a couple, that's all." Allen is more than 800 trifectas ahead of Kidd, and still has a shot to catch all-time leader Reggie Miller. Difference maker: While it's obvious Dirk Nowitzki makes a difference offensively, his impact on defense cannot be overlooked.
