Mavs said to be Stojakovic's 1st choice; team set to trade Ajinca

 CHICAGO — Jason Terry   has been on the wrong end of some big-time
performances by Peja Stojakovic, so when news circulated that the Mavericks
seem likely to acquire the veteran shooter, Terry smiled.

“He’ll be very welcomed,” Terry said. “He can shoot. And I mean big
shots, real big shots.”

 The Mavericks know they can’t replace Caron Butler , who has been lost to a
knee injury. But they are on the brink of assembling an array of candidates
to help fill the void. Two sources said that they are believed to be the
first choice of Stojakovic, the veteran shooter who was waived Thursday by
the Toronto Raptors and will be a free agent when he clears waivers Monday.

 Several teams are interested in Stojakovic, and there remains a chance that
he could have a change of mind. But the Mavericks put the wheels in motion to
make room for him without losing impressive newcomer Sasha Pavlovic.

  In a separate deal, they were finalizing a trade of big man Alexis Ajinca
to the Raptors, along with a future second-round pick and cash. Owner Mark
Cuban  said that deal, which is expected to be approved by the NBA today, had
no bearing on the potential Stojakovic signing.

“No, they asked about Ajinca after they had bought out Peja,” Cuban said. “
No connection. They had been asking about him since we got him. We hadn’t
wanted to trade him.

“But when they asked about him this time, we were in a different position.
If they hadn’t asked about Ajinca, we would have released someone else to
make room to sign Peja.”

 The 33-year-old Stojakovic had his best years with Sacramento  and New
Orleans. Twice in playoff series, he torched the Mavericks, most recently in
2008 when he was with the Hornets.

 Stojakovic has played just eight games this season. He was fighting knee
problems, but in November he had a 17-point game against the Mavericks. The
Raptors said when they acquired him with Jerryd Bayless that Stojakovic would
either be traded or bought out.

The Mavericks could use several mechanisms to sign Stojakovic. They could use
a veteran minimum salary slot, the bi-annual exception or their mid-level
exception. The two exceptions are worth significantly more than the veteran
minimum.

Stojakovic was a three-time All-Star when he was with the Kings. He got rave
reviews in the Mavericks’ locker room.

 “If it comes to pass, he’s a great shooter, one of the best in the game,”
 said Tyson Chandler, who played with Stojakovic in New Orleans. “And he’s
not just a great shooter, but a great scorer. He’s a great piece to have.”

Ajinca was at United Center for the Mavericks’ game.

33歲的Peja Stojakovic本季只打了8場比賽，有膝傷問題， 不過他在去年11月對上
小牛時攻下17分。

他在國王時期，三次入選全明星賽。

Tyson Chandler和Peja Stojakovic曾經在黃蜂當過隊友。
