Mavs have decision to make on signing Pavlovic for rest of season

Sasha Pavlovic’s first 10-day term with the Mavericks ended with him
sloughing off a broken nose and helping the team break out of its first
six-game losing streak in 11 years. Wearing a protective face mask, he
started for the first time and played 24 minutes as the Mavs stunned the Los
Angeles Lakers , 109-100 , at American Airlines Center.

His second 10-day hitch will end with tonight’s game against the Atlanta
Hawks at AAC. It should be his fifth consecutive start in helping the Mavs
regain their equilibrium with the return of injured Dirk Nowitzki.

It could be his last start. To remain with the Mavs this season beyond
tonight, he would have to be signed to a guaranteed contract for the rest of
the season. Donnie Nelson, the team’s general manager and president of
basketball operations, said a decision will be made after tonight’s game.

The 6-7 swingman said Friday he doesn’t even think about this game ending
his time with the Mavs.

“I don’t want to put pressure at all,” he said. “I love being here.

“It’s a great team, great teammates.”

Pavlovic ’s departure before Peja Stojakovic becomes available could lead
coach Rick Carlisle to start 6-5 DeShawn Stevenson in Pavlovic’s spot with
Jason Terry alongside Jason Kidd. In the first four games after Caron Butler
joined Nowitzki out of the lineup in early January, the starters were Terry,
Kidd, Stevenson, Shawn Marion and Tyson Chandler.

Carlisle said of Stevenson: “His game for us is going to start with solid
defense and take open shots. We want him to make plays that are the right
plays and ones that he’s capable of making.

“Our team is structured to have a really good bench. We need them to provide
balance to our starters. We don’t necessarily start our five best players.
When we sub, we expect to get better, at least offensively.”

Board games: In the Mavs’ last 10 games, they’ve been out-rebounded eight
times and drawn even twice. Some of those games have been played without
Chandler and Nowitzki, their two top rebounders.

“It’s up and down,” Marion said of the team’s rebounding. “Depending on
the game, you get a team that misses , you’re going to get more. But we just
have to watch our techniques and boxing out.”

New combo up front: Carlisle likes the rebounding and defense that center Ian
Mahinmi brings off the bench and has played him alongside center Brendan
Haywood in the last two games.

“It’s something that we can continue to try to develop with him,” Carlisle
said. “It just expands his game and expands our possibilities. He’s one of
our best defenders, one of our best rebounders.”
