Carlisle on Roddy B.: 'His energy was infectious; everybody's excited'

The young kid was back in action.
The old Kidd stole his show.
Jason Kidd’s remarkable 3-point shooting overshadowed a big-time season
debut by Roddy Beaubois to push the Mavericks to a 116-100 wipeout of the
Sacramento Kings on Wednesday night.
It was the Mavericks’ 12th win in 13 games.
It also was their seventh consecutive home win, which isn’t bad for a team
that sputtered and wheezed on the home floor so often early in the season.
Beaubois, out since a left foot injury in August required surgery, came into
the game early and was flashy from the start. But it was his third quarter
that coincided with Kidd’s high-octane offense that made Mavericks’ fans
even more hopeful that this season has grand possibilities.
To see Kidd and Beaubois playing off of each other put a charge into the
crowd and the Mavericks. There was no easing into things for Beaubois and no
transition period for anybody else.
“It feels great to be a part of it again, and I’m happy about that,”
Beaubois said. “It was tough, but it was the first one. I need a couple
games. The foot is good. I just have to get my legs. It’s been a long time,
but I have to keep working on it.”
His energy was infectious, coach Rick Carlisle said.
“I think everybody’s excited about it,” he said. “We were playing a
depleted opponent, but it was the right situation to bring him back. It’s a
beginning. Jason will probably have fewer assists if he plays with Roddy
because it allows him to play off the ball, which is a positive for us. We
had a lot of options before. And now we have more.”
Beaubois, who turns 23 next week, finished with 13 points and six assists in
21 minutes. Kidd, who turns 38 next month, hit his first six 3-pointers and
finished with 20 points and four assists. He led eight Mavericks in double
figures, including J.J. Barea with 11 points and 10 assists. Brendan Haywood
also had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
It was the first time since April 6, 1993, that eight Mavericks reached
double figures in a game.
But the night belonged to Beaubois, at least in theory.
“It was great for him,” Barea said. “I know he’s missed it and we were
happy for him. He’s waited all year for this.”
Before the game, there was an air of anticipation because nobody knew what to
expect. Beaubois, whose last appearance was Game 6 in the first round against
San Antonio in April, didn’t disappoint.
When he jumped on the court with just 2:07 gone after the opening tip,
Beaubois was an ultra-quick blur on the floor, which suggests that his foot
has no lingering problems. He also energized his teammates, which cannot be
overstated.
“All things considered, pretty solid,” Carlisle said. “There were some ups
and downs. But a lot of positives. Kidd was great. We got a bad start to the
third quarter and he really was the one who brought us back to life.
“This team is built around a lot of important, valuable pieces. Most nights,
we’ll go nine deep but we have the ability to go 12 deep.”
Roddy’s a shooter for now: The foot injury that Beaubois suffered not only
set him back in terms of development, but also put his future as a point
guard on hold for a while.
“Totally,” Carlisle said. “He’s really had virtually zero chance to play
it since the French thing. But of all the guys on our team, if you were to
quiz everybody on what we have put in and what guys at each position do, he
would know as much or more as anybody on the team.
“He’d be right up there with Kidd because he really studies it and has a
great grasp of it.”
