The Western Conference did not get any weaker. Not the part that matters to
the Mavericks, anyway.
While Carmelo Anthony and Deron Williams went to the Eastern Conference, the
elite teams of the West made a strong statement about their optimism for
success at Thursday’s trade deadline.
They did nothing.
“I can speak for only us, and I think it’s a sign that chemistry is really
important,’’ Mavericks president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson
said. “And I know that San Antonio feels like that as well.
“When you got it, don’t mess with it. One of the arts of management is not
screwing things up. We got a special group. They’re clicking.’’
That chemistry is why the Mavericks elected to stand pat as the NBA’s swap
meet came to an end. The Spurs and Los Angeles Lakers, like the Mavericks,
liked their situations so much that they saw no reason to make changes.
And so, the West’s top three clubs drew the battle lines. They all think
they have a legitimate shot at reaching the NBA Finals.
Oklahoma City might, as well, but felt compelled to add a major piece in
center Kendrick Perkins, acquiring him from Boston for talented forward Jeff
Green.
For the Mavericks, if the players wanted a show of faith from management,
they got it.
“You know you can’t control what management is going to do, but I do know
right now, with this team we have, we’re a contender,’’ Jason Terry said.
“It [not making a trade] is big because it instills confidence in guys from
management. We know they believe in us. We know we’re a strong team. It just
reassures our thoughts.’’
Nelson and owner Mark Cuban worked hard in the days leading up to the
deadline. They had a valuable asset in the expiring contract of Caron Butler,
who is out at least for the rest of the regular season.
But they let it be known quickly they were not going to add a bunch of assets
to Butler’s contract. And they were determined not to acquire any long-term
salary unless it was a difference-maker.
“We listened, obviously,’’ Nelson said. “We were engaged with almost
every team in the league at some level. You’re looking at everything. That’
s what we do. We were just doing our job. But at the end of the day, this
team has a special chemistry.
“Ultimately, you have to give to get. We were not willing to give up any of
our core rotation guys, because we got a unique thing in that locker room.
That’s really what it came down to. It would have had to be an over-the-top
deal, an absolute no-brainer. Otherwise, we want to give these guys the
freedom to make their run.’’
The Mavericks apparently didn’t get much further than the red zone in terms
of closing any deals. They had some interest in a defensive-minded wing
player like Tayshaun Prince, but the only player of that ilk that moved was
Houston’s Shane Battier, and Memphis had to give up 2009 second-overall
draft pick Hasheem Thabeet to get him.
What the Mavericks did is find out who on the roster rates as one of their
most valuable assets going forward.
“Roddy [Beaubois] is a very popular Maverick when it comes to receiving
phone calls,’’ Nelson said.
The second-year guard was brought up in virtually every trade scenario. Those
conversations didn’t last long as the Mavericks remain enthused about the
future of Beaubois.
Ditto for Butler, who now is going to be a Maverick until at least July 1. At
that point, they’ll have to decide whether to re-sign him. Nelson called him
a part of the Mavericks’ fabric, which will be taken into account going
forward.
“That’s really a summer conversation,’’ Nelson said of Butler’s contract
situation. “Right now, we’re trying to get him healthy; and if there is a
possibility for him to join us [in the playoffs], terrific. When you lose a
guy like Caron, the immediate thought is how we’re going to replace that
firepower. But Peja [Stojakovic] is really starting to kick in, and Shawn
Marion has been terrific all year. And you got Roddy now who is starting to
feel good about himself.
“So as we took a look at the team landscape, the answer’s right there in
our locker room.’’
The folks in LA and San Antonio feel the same way.
The Mavericks, Spurs and Lakers made strong statements about their teams by
standing pat at the NBA’s trade deadline.
在交易截止前很多球隊在打電話詢問價錢
小牛認為現在陣容已經夠強
另外有不少球隊詢問Beaubois
不過小牛一聽到Beaubois就拒絕交易
