Nelson: Mavs will stick with 14 on roster, watch waiver wire

14 on the roster, for now: President Donnie Nelson said the Mavericks will
stick with 14 roster members, although they will keep a close eye on the
waiver wire.

“It’s certainly a possibility,’’ he said of adding a player. “I don’t
know at this point. We have a pretty set rotation. I don’t know how that
person would fall into the mix.’’

Warriors forward Troy Murphy is among those players who could be bought out
or waived before the end of the month, meaning they could be signed by
another team and be eligible for the playoff roster.

Briefly: Nelson said he sang “Happy Birthday” to Beaubois, sort of. “It
was a twangy, country version,’’ said Nelson, who is normally in cowboy
boots. “I don’t think he appreciated it.’’ … Carlisle played 12 players
in the first half against Utah. He said the players should not get used to
that. “I don’t expect to play 12 guys in the first half every game,’’ he
said. “We had fouls and other situations and stretches where we were
sluggish, so it just happened to go that way. Going forward, I think the
message is going to be the same. We need everybody.’’
