Mavericks sign Corey Brewer to 3-year deal; how he can help

The Mavericks made it official with the signing of fourth-year swingman Corey
Brewer after he cleared waivers at 1 p.m.
The deal is for three years and is believed to start at about $2 million.
"He's a different kind of player than we have," coach Rick Carlisle said.
"He's a wing player who's long, athletic and very fast. He played on two
national championship teams (at Florida). So he knows how to win.
"There were other teams that offered him more money to come to them, but I
think he likes what our team looks like and has an opportunity to help us
this year. This is one of those situations where if we can get a guy who can
get one stop at the right time, it's a good move for us."
Brewer could be active on Friday when the Mavericks.
He's spent 3 ½ seasons with Minnesota and has been viewed as a good defender
with a so-so offensive game.
He is considered a good locker-room presence and might help the Mavericks not
only this season, but moving forward next season, when it's possible that
Peja Stojakovic and DeShawn Stevenson may not be part of the team's fabric.
The 6-9 Brewer, who was the No. 7 overall pick by Minnesota in the 2007
draft, turns 25 on Saturday.
Last year at this time, he inadvertently broke Jason Terry's orbital bone, an
injury that knocked out Terry for a few weeks.
"Another piece to the puzzle," Terry said, who holds no grudges about the
facial fracture. "Not at all. He didn't do it intentionally. It's all good.
This kid is going to work hard and us veterans will rub off on him. He'll get
the sense of what he's walking into when he walks through the door."
Terry said he doesn't have the mask he had to wear when returning from the
orbital injury.
"I don't even joke about it because the last two years I've been injured at
the end of the season," he said. "I'm just trying to stay healthy and hope
everybody stays healthy."
Brewer was part of the trade that sent Carmelo Anthony to New York. The
Knicks cut Brewer and he cleared waivers Thursday.
This year, in 56 games, he averaged 8.6 points and 2.7 rebounds. His shooting
slipped to below 40 percent and under 27 percent from long range.
