Corey Brewer comes up big

Corey Brewer only played four minutes in the Portland series. But teammates
say no Maverick works harder on non-game days, honing his shot, conditioning,
whatever it takes, than Brewer.

That probably explains why the Mavericks sideline erupted in celebration when
Brewer's 3-pointer from the right corner brought Dallas within 64-61 with
5:22 left in the third quarter. Defensively, Brewer was one of several
Mavericks who took a turn attempting to guard Kobe Bryant. He didn't stop
Bryant, but he certainly helped slow him.

"When Kobe gets in a zone, he's almost unstoppable," Brewer said. "All you
can do is contest and try to make it tough for him."

Brewer scored 8 points in 8:21 of action in Game 1. He obviously didn't lead
Dallas in scoring, but he almost certainly had the widest smile in the locker
room.

"It felt good," Brewer said. "I was just happy to get a chance to help the
team, made some plays and we got the win. Couldn't be any happier."

"They always tell me to be ready," Brewer said. "It was good to go in, make a
3, get the team going. Once the team's going, it's good."
