[外電] Until Dirk Nowitzki returns, the Maver

With nine new names on the roster — and the biggest name out until maybe
Christmas — it may be hard to recognize your Mavs in the home opener
Saturday against Charlotte.

If such proves to be the case, let me clue you in:

Pay attention to No. 4 for the Mavs. He looks like a keeper.

Darren Collison has been a constant in the Mavs’ roller coaster start, and
not just because he scored a team-high 17 points in both games.

He consistently pushes the ball, a must for a team that can’t create fast
breaks naturally, through good rebounding. He’s also shown leadership
qualities. He led a stunning upset of the Lakers in the season opener, and he
took the blame for a third-quarter collapse against Utah.

In short, Collison has become the focal point of a cast of newcomers in Dirk
Nowitzki’s absence, passing his first test.

The next still awaits: How does he mesh with the face of the franchise when
Dirk returns?

Over the course of a spectacular career here in Dallas, Nowitzki has played
with only a handful of point guards. A couple just happened to be Hall of
Famers. Dirk enjoyed their company.

As for the rest? Not so much.

Devin Harris, a one-man fast break, rarely was on the same page with
Nowitzki, whose body language wasn’t hard to translate. He sorely missed
Steve Nash, prince of the pick and roll.

In the twilight of his career, Jason Kidd played a game far different from
either of his predecessors. But let’s not forget which point guard won a
title, and whom Nowitzki called captain.

J.J. Barea and Beaubois? When Dirk has to shout, “Give me the ball!” I don’
t think I need to say more.

Now along comes Collison. He’s played exactly one game with Nowitzki, the
preseason opener.

Collison’s take: “He made everybody’s game a lot easier. Every time I came
off the pick and roll, I was open.”

Anything else?

“He’s extremely humble for a player of his stature.”

Collison comes to Dallas with a mixed record. A terrific rookie season out of
UCLA has not been repeated. Nevertheless, league observers considered it a
coup when the Mavs acquired him and Dahntay Jones for Ian Mahinmi, who led
Dallas in pregame cheers and little else.

Collison’s game is more like Nash’s than Kidd’s. But before you get sucked
into the obvious advantages — better shooter and penetrator, and he’d beat
Kidd down the court if you spotted the elder a 10-yard head start — let’s
not forget what Kidd brought to the party. He might have been the most
intuitive player ever to wear a Mavs uniform. He could be also be a sneaky,
physical defender, and he was a great rebounder for a point guard.

The Mavs could use a little of that rebounding now. Actually, they could use
a lot. In its absence, it helps that Collison is so prone to push, push,
push, no matter who’s on the floor with him.

Until Dirk gets back, it’s Collison’s show. If he can remember who gets top
billing once the Big German is back, we could get used to this.
