As the Mavericks recognize just how spoiled they’ve been for the last
decade-plus of constant winning, Dirk Nowitzki has a strong message to
anybody who may be getting the wrong impression.

He will not quit.

And by that, he means he’s not on the trading block, at least not as far as
he’s concerned. He is looking forward to figuring out a way to pull the
Mavericks out of their funk short term – and throwing his faith in owner
Mark Cuban and president Donnie Nelson that a championship level team still
can be rebuilt quickly in the longer term.

“They have a great track record,” Nowitzki said. “Donnie and Cubes always
pull a rabbit out of their hats most of the time where people said that wasn’
t possible and still found a way to make the franchise better. We took a
gamble on Tyson (Chandler) two years ago when he’d basically been hurt for
two years and didn’t play and we brought him in and he was a game-changer
for us. You got to be lucky a little bit sometimes. And you got to go for it.
Cubes and Donnie have always shown they go for it. We’ll have to wait and
see. The trade deadline is still a couple weeks away, we’ll see if anything
happens this year and if not, we’ll hang it all out there and see what
happens this summer.”

As for his attitude toward the team and being eight games under .500 with 48
to play, he said.

“I’m looking at myself. I’m pushing, trying to get better and get to the
point where I can take over games down the stretch. I’m sure we’ll win our
fair share. I’ll keep pushing. That’s the only way I know.

“I never quit. So I’m going to keep pushing to get back to where I was at
the end of last year when my knee was right.”

Nowitzki said any inference that he was open to a trade – he’s one of the
few players in the league with a no-trade clause in his contract, meaning he
has to OK any deal – is incorrect. He first alluded to possible trades for
the team last week in Washington after the Mavericks beat the Wizards.

“I never said I wanted to be traded,” he said. “I said what I’ve said
numerous times. We tried to sign D-Will (Deron Williams) and didn’t, so you
have two options. You either trade everybody and start over or you bring in a
bunch of one-year deals, which we did, and try to be a player next summer and
that’s what we went for and we’re going through that now with eight new
guys. It’s a little ugly at times, but we got to fight through it.”

Nowitzki complimented the Mavericks on improved competitiveness lately, but
he said his injury that cost him the first 27 games of the season is the
reason the team is fighting from such a deep hole.

“It’s a lot of losing,” he said. “People are on the edge. The whole
atmosphere is not fun to be around. But it’s not supposed to be when you’re
losing.

“I’m frustrated that I missed two months and I’m not quite there yet where
I can close those games out, which I should. I’m just not quite there yet.
When we put this team together in the off-season and we got Darren and got
Kaman, we didn’t think I was going to miss two months.

“If I was healthy all season, we would have won a couple more and be
hopefully right around .500 and still be fighting for the eighth spot. So me
missing two months kind of put us behind the 8-ball.”
