AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Statistically, Vince Carter is having one of the
poorest rebounding seasons of his career at just 3.5 per game.
But per minute played, Carter is right on his career average of about seven
rebounds every 48 minutes played.
And in the last three games, he’s been particularly strong on the boards,
which is another reason the Mavericks have continued to dominate the glass
against virtually every team they see these days.
“It really helps when Vince rebounds well because generally when he goes
into the game, Dirk [Nowitzki] is out,” Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said.
“You take a 7-1 guy out and put a 6-7 guy in and now [Shawn] Marion is the
power forward, and we may have a smaller center [DeJuan Blair] in there.
“So getting rebounding from perimeter positions is really important. We don’
t have any Hercules-type guys that are going to dominate the game by
themselves. So we have to do it as a collective unit.”
Carter had 16 rebounds in the previous two games before playing at Detroit,
where he pulled down six boards. That’s 7.3 per game in that span.
He was solid all-around with 18 points and five assists in addition to his
board work. He hit 3-of-6 from 3-point land.
So is Carter trying to lead the Mavericks in rebounding?
“Why not?” he said. “I know it’s going to be hard with Trix [Marion], who
is a great rebounder. I’m just trying to do my part. Every now and then, I
just try to put my body in there.”
