Vince Carter has been on a serious sizzle of late. His points per minute are
off the charts and he’s piled up some impressive overall numbers.

He’s averaging 13.3 points over the last 15 games. And he’s shot a shade
over 40-percent from 3-point range in February. It’s not surprising that the
Dallas Mavericks have reaped the benefits of Carter’s uptick with their
hottest stretch of the season, including Wednesday’s 108-89 win over New
Orleans.

So is it time to get his sixth-man-of-the-year campaign underway?

“I try not to get caught up in it,” Carter said after knocking down 17
points in 22 minutes against the Pelicans. “I’m just going to do my job.
Hopefully that will be good enough.

“This is the truth. Being considered in the sixth-man thing is good enough,
even if I don’t win it. It’s a new position I took on as a challenge and I’
ve accomplished the next goal, the next phase of my game, where I can come
off the bench and still be effective, something I was like, can I do it or
not.”

Carter’s competition for the honor isn’t overwhelming. Players like Chicago
’s Taj Gibson, the Lakers’ Nick Young, San Antonio’s Manu Ginobili, Phoenix
’s Markieff Morris and the Clippers’ Jamal Crawford are in the running.

Carter’s impact measures up nicely against any of them.

Mostly, he’s just happy to be performing well when the Mavericks need him
most.

“This is when you make your money,” he said of the stretch run of the
season. “It’s my time to step it up for the team and be consistent and
aggressive and make plays. I haven’t really thought about it. It’s a great
feeling being a spark and people recognizing it.”
