It was Vince Carter night at American Airlines Center, a promotion dreamed up
to give out fee T-shirts to fans and champion Carter’s cause for sixth man
of the year.
While they were at it, the Mavericks made sure to send even more love Carter’
s way.
A week ago, he said he thought he’d earned the right to return to the
Mavericks next season. His contract ends when this season is over, but he
truly wants to re-sign here.
“The feeling is absolutely mutual,” president of basketball operations
Donnie Nelson said Tuesday. “When you’ve got that kind of veteran
leadership, we’re a better team. It’s better for the younger guys. Those
are the kind of guys you want in that locker room carrying that baton and
eventually passing it along.”
Carter is finishing up a three-year deal with the Mavericks that paid him
slightly more than $9 million. It’s been a huge value for what the Mavericks
expected from Carter when they signed him.
“It exceeds it,” Nelson said of Carter’s production weighed against
expectations. “And I think Vince is one of those rare guys that just has
gotten better with time. He was a human highlight reel coming out. Now he’s
making plays, he’s passing, he’s a leader on the floor. Obviously the
3-ball has really taken his game to a different level and most veteran guys
if they’re going to have longevity in the league, you can’t be
one-dimensional.”
Owner Mark Cuban said he was trying to find a way to honor Carter, 37, who
has averaged 12 points exclusively as the Mavericks’ sixth man this season.
“The fans have been great,” Cuban said. “I wanted a reason to give them a
T-shirt and Vince has earned it. He’s literally been taking over games. He
deserves to be a candidate, and I don’t think he’s getting the attention he
deserves, but that’s just the way it goes.”
