On a night when he might not have been the most effective power forward
wearing a home uniform, Dirk Nowitzki continued his rise among basketball’s
royalty.
With every legend he passes, Nowitzki cements himself ever stronger into the
NBA history book.
On Friday, Dallas’ Dirty D surpassed the Big E.
Nowitzki eased past Elvin Hayes on the all-time scoring list with a 20-foot
jumper early in the third quarter that helped spring the Mavericks to a
double-figure lead and an eventual 102-98 victory over the Los Angeles
Lakers, who played without Kobe Bryant.
The sellout crowd at American Airlines Center — which clearly was aware of
Nowitzki’s impending milestone — gave him an impromptu standing ovation
after the basket. At the next timeout, when the moment was recognized on the
video board, Nowitzki received an extended ovation.
Nowitzki is not done — either in the short-term or in years to come. Moses
Malone is next, and Nowitzki is 88 points from passing him for seventh. After
that, it’ll be No. 6 Shaquille O’Neal — probably sometime next season.
The next five in ascending order? Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan, Bryant,
Karl Malone and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
No matter what criteria you use, that’s an incredible list to be a part of.
“It’s hard to describe what we’re seeing in real time,” coach Rick
Carlisle said. “He’s making it look sort of easy. The amount of work that’
s gone into getting to this point of his career is [hard] to fathom. It’s
not an accident. A lot of blood, a lot of sweat, a lot of guts go into a
career like this.
“Kobe Bryant is the same kind of guy. These are once-a-generation type
players. We’re just very fortunate we’ve had a chance to watch it for an
extended period of time.”
Bryant sat out the game to rest.
Afterward, Nowitzki and Bryant shared a brief moment on the court.
“I told him I was going to catch him,” Nowitzki said with a laugh.
“It’s going to be hard to do, but I’m gonna try.”
Nowitzki was humble about his evening, which wasn’t bad for a guy who missed
the shoot-around Friday morning because of a stomach issue that has been
bothering him for several days.
“It’s been up and down for the last couple weeks,” Nowitzki said. “I had
it checked out [Friday morning]. I just hope to feel better soon.”
He said he had not heard any results from his doctor’s visit.
The Mavericks broke a two-game losing streak and showed signs of growth
offensively. Rajon Rondo had a season-best 21 points to go with eight
rebounds and seven assists.
They also benefited from some awful Lakers shooting. The Lakers were shooting
32.4 percent after three quarters, when it was actually kind of surprising
that the Mavericks weren’t ahead by more than 72-62.
More surprising?
That Nowitzki’s backup, Charlie Villanueva, might have been the more
impressive player at that position.
Villanueva, continuing to blossom since the trade that brought Rondo to the
Mavericks, knocked in 3 of 6 3-pointers as the Mavericks were preventing the
Lakers from getting within striking range in the fourth quarter.
He finished with 13 points.
“It doesn’t really matter how long he’s been sitting on the bench, he’s
got a flame-thrower and he’s always ready,” Nowitzki said of Villanueva’s
quick release. “It’s been fun to watch. He came here on a non-guaranteed
deal and made it.”
Villanueva has done that.
In the last three games, he has averaged 15 points and hit 11 of 21 from
3-point range.
Considering the 6-9 veteran was a long shot to make the team in training
camp, it’s been a remarkable revival.
“It’s been a humbling experience,” Villanueva said. “The hardest part was
getting into the rotation. It took about 20 games. I respect coach and the
fact that he has confidence in me.
“You got to defend to stay on the court. I’m never shy with my shot.
Shooters keep shooting. I’m just glad I’m getting an opportunity to get
some minutes.”
Added Carlisle: “With the trade, he’s become a more important guy for us.
And again, he’s done a lot of good things and he’s impressed everybody with
the integrity which he’s approached the whole thing.
“Having guys that can shoot the basketball is always a positive.”
