The Heat got a dose of good news when backup center Alonzo Mourning said his
left calf is getting stronger every day, and he expects to assume a much
larger role when Miami opens its second-round playoff series against the New
Jersey Nets on Monday.
Mourning missed the first two games in the opening round against the Chicago
Bulls and saw minimal action in the series' final four games. He played nine
minutes per game and only four Thursday, when Miami clinched the series.
''I see no setbacks whatsoever,'' said Mourning, who sustained the injury in
late March. ``I've had my setbacks, which is great, because I haven't rushed
this whole process.''
Mourning said he is prepared to be on the court as much as he was during the
regular season, when he played 20 minutes a game.
He revealed that doctors had encouraged him to play sooner than he wanted.
Mourning felt weak and experienced discomfort in his leg, but doctors told
him the only way to strengthen it would be returning to the court, even if it
was just for five minutes during a game.
''I was hesitant,'' Mourning said.
``I actually didn't feel comfortable at all coming back. I wanted to sit out
a little bit more, but I listened to my doctors. I'm happy that I did come
back and start playing just a little bit because I noticed a huge difference.
Just today, I feel a whole lot better than I did a week ago.''
