MIAMI - The damage to Alonzo Mourning's right knee turned out to be more
extensive than initially thought, with the Heat center not only rupturing the
patella tendon in his right knee during Wednesday night's game in Atlanta,
but also tearing his quadriceps tendon in that leg.
莫寧的傷勢不僅傷到了右膝，還拉傷了右腿四頭肌。

Thursday's two-hour procedure performed by team physician Harlan Selesnick
at Doctors Hospital in Coral Gables will leave the 37-year-old former
All-Star in a hard cast for a month, a brace for another month, to be
followed by six months of rehabilitation.

Mourning, 37, previously had spoken of making his 15th season his last in the
league.

However, coach Pat Riley said before Thursday\'s home game against the Nets
that there are no pending retirement announcements regarding the franchise's
all-time leading scorer.


"I would allow Zo to think anything he wants to think," Riley said. "I
won't let him retire his mind, because he sort of defies the odds. Even
though we're very concerned about it, this man has a spirit that can never
flat-line. It just can't."

Mourning on Thursday noted the irony that Wednesday marked the four-year
anniversary of his kidney transplant. He had been made aware since that
surgery that the anti-rejection medication could weaken connective tissue.

A formal retirement announcement could come with the retirement of his No.

such an abrupt decision.

"I don't wish it would have happened to somebody else, but I wish it
wouldn't have happened to him," he said. "He works so hard, in the gym
every day. He does stuff that some of these young guys should be doing.

O'Neal seconded the idea of a special ceremony.

retired," he said. "I will be here for that ceremony and I will give a
great speech that day."
