Miami Heat guard Chalmers stays positive amid slump

HOUSTON -- Don't bother having pity for Heat rookie point guard Mario
Chalmers, who is going through his first extended slump.

Chalmers isn't feeling sorry for himself. He almost doesn't want to admit
that he's struggling.

''You have to be really mentally strong -- to keep you out of the slump,''
Chalmers said after practice Friday at Toyota Center. ``[I] just look at it
as one or two bad games, and try to come out of it the next game.''

Chalmers was held scoreless in two of the past three games, and has shot 1 of
13 from the field in that span. Until then, Chalmers had been considered the
steal of the draft, when he earned the Heat's starting job after he fell to
the second round.

Chalmers still ranks among NBA rookie leaders in assists, steals and minutes
played this season.

Chalmers has started all 38 games for the Heat, but was benched at the start
of the second half of Wednesday's victory at Milwaukee.

Coach Erik Spoelstra wouldn't say for certain Friday whether Chalmers would
start Saturday against the Rockets.

''I'm not going to overact on it,'' Spoelstra said. ``He has to earn it. He
had a pretty good practice [Friday]. It's not like he's caving in.''

Artest (ankle) in Saturday's game.

But with the Heat playing the sixth game of a seven-game trip, guard Dwyane
Wade said it's not time to ease up.

''You mentally fight through it,'' Wade said. ``To not get embarrassed, we
have to go out, play our game.''
