With co-captain Udonis Haslem lost indefinitely and the Heat getting pummeled inside throughout the season, Dampier was the best big man available on the market after accepting a buyout from the Charlotte Bobcats before the season started and becoming an unrestricted free agent. The coaching staff hopes his presence inside as a low-post defender and rebounder will help plug one of the team's holes in the roster. "I just wanted to make sure it was the right situation for me," said Dampier shortly after signing with Miami and wrapping up his first practice. "You never know what happens after training camp, the start of the season and injuries happen. I had other options but I wanted to be on a contending team. They have great guys on this team, some of the best players in the league, so this gave me an opportunity to come here and play. I just got to make the best of it." Dampier was the last player off the court following Tuesday's practice, going overtime alongside rookie Dexter Pittman after the rest of the team had finished up. Both big men, on opposite ends of their careers, worked on drills together with the coaching staff. The former Mavericks center is eager to play immediately to help out his new team. "Obviously, when you miss training camp, first month of the season and the first 13 games, you're not going to be in game-playing shape," he said. "But I'm not out of shape, so I just got to continue to work and get myself into playing shape." For the time being, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra confirmed that Zydrunas Ilgauskas will continue starting as the team attempts to integrate Dampier, the fifth and newest center, into the game plan. Jerry Stackhouse, Dampier's former teammate in Dallas who also lost to the Heat in the 2006 NBA Finals, was waived to create room on the roster. Stackhouse originally signed a non-guaranteed contract just prior to the start of the regular season following Mike Miller's hand injury. Now Dampier will pin his hopes for a championship ring in the twilight of his career with the very team that prevented it from happening in his only Finals appearance. The 6-foot-11, 265-pound center wants to contribute in any way he can. Whatever the team needs," he explained. "Obviously, I've been in this league going on 14, 15 years now. I know how to play the game. I've been to the Finals. I have experience so I'll definitely go out there and give a defensive effort and try to get all the rebounds I can.
