TAIPEI, Taiwan (Reuters) -- Taiwan's opposition Nationalist Party was forced to
withdraw a presidential election campaign advertisement featuring a picture of N
azi dictator Adolf Hitler after it drew protest from Jewish groups.
The full-page newspaper advertisement likened incumbent President Chen Shui-bian
to Hitler and read: "Change the president -- put an end to A-bian's dictatorshi
p." A-bian is Chen's popular nickname.
Chen and his Nationalist Party opponent, Lien Chan, are locked in a neck-and-nec
k race in a March 20 election that could be decided by a few hundred thousand vo
tes out of an electorate of 16 million.
"We express our most sincere apology to anyone in the Jewish community who felt
offended by this advertisement," Nationalist spokesman Justin Chou said.
"It will be withdrawn immediately," he said. "We are very sorry."
It was not the first incident in Taiwan involving Nazi imagery and Taiwan offici
als have acknowledged a lack of sensitivity and knowledge on the island over
the Holocaust.
In 2001, Chen's own Democratic Progressive Party withdrew a television commercia
l featuring film footage of Hitler.
A trendy Taiwan bistro with a prison camp theme had to remove pictures of Holoca
ust victims and other decor that had upset Jewish groups.
German and Israeli representatives in Taiwan also complained when a firm used a
cartoon image of Hitler in advertisements promoting German space heaters.
The commercials were withdrawn.
