The impact of the energy price shocks of the 1970s on mining equipment
sales
During the 1970s, the economy was buffeted by energy price shocks and
inflationary recessions. But, while the economy as a whole was suffering,
some sectors of the economy were doing well, such as the energy-producing
sector. The question I want those of you who are assigned the industry 35D
is, what happened to New Orders for the manufacturers of Construction,
Mining and Materials-Handling equipment during the 1970s.
Using data on New Orders from April 1959 to December 2000, describe the
trend rate of growth, the cyclical sensitivity, and the random variability of
New Orders for the Construction, Mining and Materials-Handling equipment
industry, and develop a forecast of New Orders for the first six months of
2001.
