Group 6: Long time ago, people worshiped the God Dionysus to celebrate winter festivals, and they did many activities such as dancing and singing at that time. They believed that Dionysus’ soul attached to spirits of his followers, in that way, they reached the climax of rejoicing. Time goes by, the activities transferred to a new form that we call it “drama”. In that time, the actors wore masks to perform dramas because they could help themselves change their personalities to that of characters’ successfully. On the other hand, because Dionysus is a combination of moral and god, his personality is probably extreme, multiple, and even dramatic. These are may be the reasons why he became the God of Drama. 6. Because the choral appears between scenes, we think that the function is to separate the scenes so one won’t be so long and it won’t be so difficult to understand what the drama is playing. And, the choral also can inform the audience of the plot in advance. Furthermore, it is artistic presentation, too. Because it can enhance the drama effects like that the audiences can appreciate the beautiful and charming voice and the emotions. Still, the consistent movement of chorus is another kind of artistic presentation of the play. Group 7: 1. Mattew Arnold said that Sophocles saw life steadily and saw it whole. But in this play is Sophocles facing the facts of life, or on the contrary, is he avoiding life as it usually is and presenting a series of unnatural and outrageous coincidences? Sophocles faces the facts of life, and doesn't avoid it as it usually is. He presents a series of unnatural and outrageous coincidences. The play is based on imitation and the imitation is what the man takes pleasure in. However, there are pessimists and optimists who, at any rate, believe in fate and God. On the other hand, the same people, the man, are always trying to control their lives which are also avoiding the facts of life. Finally, it is not easily judged if the both aspects are questioned. These aspects are what we can really put in action and can express ourselves in that way without the vehichle language, expression......etc. 2. the origin of the Greek tragedy The Greek tragedy has its origin in ancient Greek festivals of worship. It flourishs throughout the classical period as much as a religious rite as a form of entertainment. It is also revived again as part of divine worship in the tropes, miracles and mystery plays during the medieval period. Group 8: 8. Can you describe your emotions at the end of the play? Do they include pity for Oedipus? Pity for all human beings, including yourself? Fear that you might be punish for some unintended transgression? Awe, engendered by a perception of the interrelatedness of things? Relief that the story is only a story? Exhilaration? We feel pity of the family. Jocasta, Oedipus’s mother, tried to escape from the curse sent by Apollo. She even sent away her lovely son, but still couldn’t change her destiny. We do sympathize with Oedipus, though he committed a crime of killing. He didn’t kill his father on purpose. After reading this play, we pity for all the human beings which includes us. We fear that we may be punished for some unintended transgression like Oedipus. We also feel helpless when we facing our fate. Since we can’t foresee our own future, we should pay attention to what we do. For it may bring us disasters in the following lives. In fact, we shouldn’t view this story as only a story or pretend that it’s irrelative to our lives, because these tragedies happen in every moment on the earth. Group 9: Q: Analyze the characterization of Oedipus. A: Oedipus is suspicious. When he asked Teiresias who killed Laius, he didn't believe Teiresias and he suspected that Creon colluded with Teiresias because they wanted to replace Oedipus for the throne. He is also implusive. When he conflicted with people at the forked road who was his real father that he didn't know, under the great rage, he killed his father. He made dicision quickly, and he was quick-tempered. As soon as he decided what to do, he put it to action right away. Group 10: 10. Analyze the plot arrangement at the play. As we know, a play contains six major parts--- exposition, rising action, conflict, climax, falling action, and ending. In Oedipus the King, we think: *Exposition: The plague attacked Thebes. *Rising action: Creon returned with the news that as long as the murderer of Laius was found out, the terrible plague would end. *Conflict: Tiresias told Oedipus that he was the responsible for the disaster. *Climax: Oedipus learned that he was exactly the one he had tried to capture to stop the plague. *Falling action: Oedipus received the fact that he had killed his father and slept with his mother. *Ending: Jocasta hanged herself and Oedipus blinded himself, begging for an exile. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 218.184.16.73
