Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Below you will find the first circular and call for abstracts for ICSTLL-41. Because the conference organizer, Dr. Justin Watkins, is currently away doing fieldwork, he has asked me to send out this information on his behalf. If you have questions, please direct them to ICSTLL41@soas.ac.uk rather than to me. Apologies for any duplicate emails received!

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
I’m very pleased to be able to announce that the 41st International Conference on Sino-Tibetan Languages and Linguistics will be held at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in the University of London from 18-21 September 2008, hosted by the Department of South East Asia and the Islands in conjunction with the Centre of South East Asian Studies.
If there is interest, pre-conference workshops may be held on 17th and 16th September.
Further conference information will be available from April 2008 on the conference website at
http://mercury.soas.ac.uk/wadict/icstll41/.
Intention to Participate
If you plan to attend the conference, please send an email to ICSTLL41@soas.ac.uk giving your email address and saying whether or not you intend to present a paper and/or to organise a panel or workshop.
This will help the organisers to determine how many participants to plan for. We will make a list of participants and paper titles available on the web site in advance of the conference.
Call for Abstracts – deadline 15 June 2008
Papers are welcome on all aspects of languages and linguistics in the Sino-Tibetan area.
Abstracts should be on one page in English, or bilingual including English, clearly stating the name, affiliation institution and email address of each submitter. Please use plain text, Microsoft Work or pdf format if possible. Postal submissions may be sent to Justin Watkins at the SOAS address at the bottom of this notice.
Conference Language
The language of conference presentations will be English. If you are unable to present in English, please make arrangements for English-language handouts and/or interpretation into English.
Registration
Information on registering for the conference will included in the second circular in April 2008.
Unfortunately, London is expensive: we anticipate a registration fee rather more than in previous years, but certainly no more than of GBP £75 (£30 for students), subject to change.
Details will follow in April 2008.
Lodging
There are many hotels in the Bloomsbury area of London near to SOAS – central London caters for travellers of all kinds, but there are few bargains.
We recommend the Tavistock Hotel, where a block of rooms has been reserved.
Participants must make their own arrangements for all accommodation.
Getting to London
London is a major transport hub with several airports and many forms of public transport. Participants must make their own travel arrangements.
Visas
If you need a visa to enter the UK, contact your local British Consulate for advice on what documentation is required.
Queries relating to visas to attend the conference will be answered in April 2008.
Please circulate this announcement to colleagues and appropriate lists.
I am away on sabbatical leave and mainly incommunicado until April 2008, so no further developments or correspondence will be possible until then.
I look forward to seeing you in September 2008.
With best wishes,
Justin Watkins
