摘 要：
There is general consensus that Tibetan (Bodic branch, Tibeto-Burman family
) originally did not possess tone, even at the subphonemic level. In this
purely atonal stage, still attested in some modern dialects, syllables that
are not inflectional suffixes are high-registered. The Tibetan tonal
history can be characterized in terms of an innovative low register
encroaching steadily on the territory of the high register.
Onset voicing, the best-known tonogenetic path crosslinguistically, can be
partially explained in terms of articulatory and auditory phonetic
mechanisms, such as the tendency for prevocalic voiced obstruents to
depress pitch height. However, the simplistic and often repeated
generalization ‘voiceless onsets yielded high tone and voiced onsets
yielded low tone’ does not fit all tonal Tibetan dialects. On the one
hand, as the original Old Tibetan onset system eroded through obstruent
devoicing and cluster reduction, different modern dialects took the same
onset-voicing-based tonogenetic course but responded differently to the
complicated interplay between the preradicals and the root initials,
resulting in different tone rules. On the other hand, a number of factors
other than onset voicing have been noted to trigger the development of tone
in modern Tibetan.
In this talk, I will illustrate the variegated tonogenetic typology
attested in modern Tibetan by presenting several of these alternative
phonetic features of the syllable that gave rise to the innovative low
register in the various dialects: duration, aspiration, murmur (phonation)
, and onset glottalization. The data cited are drawn mostly from recent
fieldwork.
