Detailed Questions
[1] Converting excel data into SPSS data file, classifying data and defining
variables
Import the excel data file gradsurvey data into SPSS and save the file
with a name of your choice.
Clearly describe the variables in the data in a variable description
table by classifying them according to the type of data:
quantitative/numerical versus qualitative/non-numerical; categorical
versus continuous and according to the levels (or scales) of measurement
they represent: nominal, ordinal or interval.
Use your table to assist you define all your variables, in the Variable View
window: ensure that you set the variable attributes as described in your table.
[10 marks]
[2] Describing Categorical Data
The MBA is aimed at graduates from various academic disciplines with
management experience who want to gain a formal qualification in management.
You are required to conduct some basic analysis to determine the makeup of
the students' previous academic backgrounds.
a. Use an appropriate chart to display the variation in undergraduate
specialism. Which are the modal and least popular undergraduate specialist
subjects? [4 marks]
b. Repeat the previous part's analysis but this take gender in to account.
Does there appear to be a difference in the gender undergraduate backgrounds?
[8 marks]
c. From your analyses can you foresee any potential intake issues for the
current sample? Clear explain your rationale for any decision made.[4 marks]
[3] Describing Quantitative Data
The MBA programme leader is interested in how student performance has changed
from undergraduate to graduate, and considers cumulative GPA scores as the
data to be analysed.
a. Produce a single chart containing box-plots of undergraduate and graduate
cumulative GPA scores. Discuss their differences and describe any overall
trend. [5 marks]
b. Obtain the mean and standard deviation for the two sets of cumulative
GPA scores. Use these values to calculate the coefficient of variation for
each set. Do the values obtained support your conclusions drawn from your
box plots? Clearly explain your rationale. [5 marks]
[4] Distributions
The MBA programme leader wishes to know if the GMAT scores are normally
distributed, as a requirement for an annual review. Carry out appropriate
tests of normality on the GMAT score. Apply three tests (tools) and remember
to interpret your results. [10 marks]
[5] Hypothesis test
The MBA programme leader is interested to know if there is any significant
average age difference between males and females and if there is which is
the older group.
a. Suggest a null hypothesis and an alternative hypothesis for testing the
mean age for male and female students. [4 marks]
b. Carry out an appropriate test to compare the mean age for the two sexes,
and interpret your results. [6 marks]
[6] Data manipulation and analysis
The part of the MBA annual review requires a summary of feedback of student
support services. To help summarise students opinion, create a new variable
out of the satisfaction variable by collapsing the existing variable into
three categories - 'Unsatisfied (1--2)', 'Neutral (3--5)' and 'Satisfied (6-7)'
.You may name the new variable satiscat; and then give it an appropriate label.
Analyse the collapsed satisfaction categories so as to compare the levels of
satisfaction for the two sexes; remember to apply an appropriate test of
association. [10 marks]
[7] Correlation and regression
The MBA programme leader has become so enthralled with the benefits of using
statistical analysis as a performance indicator toolkit, then decides that
further analyses on student performance, expected and anticipated salaries
ought to be carried out.
a. Produce a scatter matrix plot for the following variables: Undergraduate
cumulative GPA, cumulative Graduate GPA, GMAT, expected salary and anticipated
salary. Include this plot in your report and use it to comment upon the streng
ths and directions of the associated correlations.[14 marks]
b. Perform linear correlation and simple regression on the cumulative
Undergraduate and Graduate GPA scores. How does the information compare to
the conclusions that you made in part a? [6 marks]
c. Perform a multiple regression treating anticipated salary as the outcome
variable and expected salary, graduate cumulative grade point average and
GMAT as predictor variables. Why or why not do the three variables
sufficiently predict students' anticipated salary? [10 marks]
