Globalizing Hip Hop and Appropriating Icons of Chinese Traditional Literature

演講大綱:

Hip-hop and rap culture, rooted in African American youth, has recently develop
ed into a global popular culture attracting youth as performers and audience fr
om global communities.   Young musicians from Taiwan and Mainland China have be
en integrating traditional Chinese opera and cultural icons into their hip hop
and pop music. This fusion of musical performances has intrigued and appealed t
o huge youth audiences in Taiwan and East Asian venues.  Mature audiences would
 do well to appreciate the profundity and skill with which these artists are ap
propriating traditional Chinese literature and globalizing hip hop and youth cu
ltures.  In this study I mainly focus on Wang Leehom’s Zaimeibian (王力宏  在
梅邊), David Tao’s Susan shuo (陶? 蘇三說) , Jay Chou’s Bencao gangmu (周傑倫
 本草綱目), Houxian’s Xixiang (後弦  西廂) and Zhang Bohong’s Chuangqian ming
yue guang (張伯宏   床前明月光).
